The old farmer has never been to a car show. When he last drove it the car was just a old used car. I have been preparing him for all of the stupid comments. He is a very feisty old guy that wont like the car being picked apart. I told him not to worry i will handle things. Just dont punch anyone its a family show. Im going to break him in at a local show on Saturday night before the big show on Monday.
its no joke. pull a hard working farmer out of the north woods of wisconsin thats proud of his old car and start ripping on the car. he is ex military and did his share of bar fights. he goes from calm to very exited in the snap of a finger. i might have my hands full. i will make sure it goes smooth. when i told him we should go to the show he said great lets go raise some hell. gotta like a 76 yo guy that still has some fight left in him. he is not checking out any time soon. it must be from all of his hard work over the years. hard work he still does. the farm was sold and the happy couple bought another farm a little smaller.
i was at a race a while back. while in the staging lanes a vette pulled under my awning to park. i couldnt find him to move it. must not have wanted the sun fading the interior. i was so pissed out came the floor jack and we moved it. the incident became a teaching moment on track etiquette that didnt go well for him.
@racer-x If ever there was a prime opportunity, to get some candid footage via a smartphone, of the potential dressing down, that the experts will get from the hardworking Wisconsin farmer, this is surely it, and don't call me Shirley !
I don’t take as a joke. It’s comedy to me because I know exactly what you are saying. Been in your shoes. Hell I’m currently dealing with my father in law at the medical center that’s fighting with staff because his daughter can’t handle him.
My wife says "shush, don't make a scene" and I say "shush, watch this"! The best part of getting old(er) is the ability to tell someone to go pound sand.
I didnt take it further out of respect for the track staff that had a show to put on for paying fans. I guarantee he wont do that again. Believe it or not this happened more than once with vette guys.
I had two OT C4's, and I avoided the purists as well. The hot rod folks avoided me too, so I felt like I didn't belong any time we went to a cruise in. You know the type, if you're not driving something like them, you are*****. I enjoyed both of mine, they weren't stock or numbers correct, but were fun driving cars. But I won't own another unless it's from the HAMB era without all the electronic garbage my two had. But since they have gotten above my pay grade, I doubt another coming my way...
the show went good. jim had fun. there were only a hand full of offers to buy the car. of course they were all stupid low ball offers from guys thinking they could steal it from a old man. they were quickly sent away. there was a 56 at the show and the 57 was parked right next to it. the guy moved his car because no one was looking at it. we all got a big laugh out of it. all in all it was a good time to be repeated on the fourth of July at Holts Motors. next saturday the 57 will go out to East Troy for there weekly show. i plan on bringing the nitro coupe for a fire up.
I pulled the trans to fix the shifter. I was told it was the original trans. It's a three speed. I can't find any numbers on it. Only casting numbers. The tailshaft has the shifter mounting pad so that's correct. Are there supposed to be any serial numbers on this trans? Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place
It appears that the shifter is bolted to the three drilled and tapped bosses on the tail shaft housing, so that is a Corvette piece although it could have been put on a passenger car trans. As far as ID’ing the year are there any casting numbers on it that would tell when the castings were produced?
https://www.corvetteforum.com/forum...91812-1957-corvette-transmission-numbers.html Can not make out your numbers on main case.
I am pretty sure that engines and transmissions were not serial numbered at the factory until 1960 or so
why not set that 3 speed off to the side and put a 4 speed in it, you wouldn't have to cut or modify anything, would make for more fun driving it and in a couple hours could always be put back....
See the numbers under the part number that is the date it was manufactured, and it should be the only number you should be concerned with for a 1960 .
So after reading this thread I realize my rear spring shackles have been flipped for the last 30 years I have In my 57 and I even installed the new springs the same way Well hell not sure what to think Is the earth really round ? Great thread OP. I'm in Oregon WI maybe I'll bump into you. Wish mine was as original or at least had the parts as yours.
Here's the thing ... the earth is both round and flat. Very similar to the shape of a Frisbee. "The four corners of the earth" comment (commonly heard) is ridiculous but be aware, you CAN still fall off the edge
The castings have casting dates, which will tell you when it was made, and should be close to the dates on the other parts in the car. Putting a 4 speed in it will totally ruin the "grinding into first" thing when you are getting ready to start moving. The old 3 speeds are so fun! oh...as for stamped numbers, this is info from Chevy from 1957
I had a Muncie 318 for 75 k miles in a daily driver only vehicle 1949 Chevy half ton and when I rebuilt it the synchros and snap rings were fine.
