A g***er?... I'm not sure. Pack***er...love the name, But I was thinking " Tail Dragard". I know it needs washed, but it will only have 40 year old dirt one time...I know the bumpers are missing, and lots of other stuff, but ...magically, they were all found in the trunk.. I don't think this art deco design needs many modificatiions (My31and37.. )
****, pillage, plunder , chopping! , sectioning , channeling , but it dosent have to be in that order !
The most valuable Packards are the ones that were coachbuilt.....coachbuilt as in custom cars...........Packard specifically manufactured the cars to be customised.
A friend of mine bought a '40 Packard coupe from a restorer, it was in about the same condition as the '37 in this thread, it did run and drive. He built his own frame, suspension, and floors; suicided the doors and put a 440 Mopar in it. Redid all the chrome and painted it purple; Sold the running ch***is back to another restorer and drives the **** out of it. They aren't THAT rare!
your not supposed to chop up a ferarri or duesenburg? DAMN! No one ever told me that... do what you want with it, there is another in a barn somewhere...I disagree with the original vehicles are worth more (just my opinion) in some cases yes....but in the majority of cases, just a money losing endevor....ya only live once, let some bloke restore it in another 50 or so years after your dead
This car tastefully done custom/rodded will bring more money than it would if it were restored. This is not an extremely valuable car in original condition, and restoration costs would exceed the value. A friend of mine had a 39 Packard a few years back that the Packard club verified was the only one known to them. It brought $35,000. Big deal! As I have always said, just because it's old, doesn't mean it's valuable. This all relates to the Chrysler Airflow with the Viper V-10 a few years ago. The Airflow guys were ready to kill. Who in there right mind would screw up a car that #1 nobody wanted, #2 restored was worth ? $25,000, and #3 sold at Barrett for $350,000.
Here here T McG From what I been seeing of late the original stuff needs a specific buyer (well I suppose the mod'ed stuff does too) but the buyers base is alot wider if you: 1) enable it to keep up with todays freeway speeds 2) make it semi reliable
LOL, so is that all I have to do to be one of the guys, post something stupid! I won't even have to work hard on that one....
Do what you want with it. There is a school of thought that says the Junior series of Packard was the start of the end for Packard. The thought said Packard should have kept building cars for the elite, not the common folk. Junior series took some of the mystique away. Nothing like driving through the poorer side of town in your 12 and seeing the Packard grill in several tract house driveways. Just call it the Gas-p***er!
My grandfather owned Packards up til around 47 I think, before he changed over to Caddies. The prettiest car he ever had was the 42 Packard convert. Very similar to your 38. Normally I would keep it original myself because I like the idea of driving a time machine like that. Of course, when I saw the pic of the front end without the bumper I was intrigued by how cool it looked sans bumper. As the others have said, it's your car.....do what YOU want to do with it. Just promise us one thing: you won't start the project, tearing it all apart, and then run out of steam on the project........... Good luck! Mac VP
Who says a Packard can't be a cool custom? http://www.johndagostinokustomkars.com/images/41 Packard Gable Finished.jpg
