Thinking about playing around with some of the MDO(?) and doing some cutouts throught the winter for the shop walls. What paint sticks to it? Are ya'll using all one shot? Root
I've allways used straight oneshot. Using one of those black foam rollers gives you a really nice finish. No need to prime, but after you cut it you'll need to dap the edges-- there'll be some voids.
When I use MDO it is mostly for outdoor signs and I prepare it thusly: Use KILZ oil base primer and give it one good coat with a FOAM roller. It lays out pretty smoothly but I've learned a trick from a retired sign painter friend; After you've layed down the coat, use one of those putty knives with the circular cutout(for cleaning rollers!)and clean the excess paint from the roller.Go back over the surface with the cleaned out roller and the paint lays right down! Let set overnight and coat with Rust-O-Leum making sure to seal the edges(to keep moisture out and prevent warpage).Let dry at least 24 hours and then use the 1-Shot to do your designs or letters. A footnote if you are doing large objects like 4'X 8' signs:Make some custom supports for the boards to allow them to be painted on both sides quickly.Take some blocke of scrap 2X4 about 5" long and run 4 two inch drywall screws through each of them so the points are sticking out about 1/2 inch or so.Set these on your saw horses(or whatever you're laying the board on)and lay the sign board on top of them with one block at each corner.Leaves an air gap under the board and VERY SMALL dimples in the surface which most of the time don't even need to be touched up.A word of caution though:When you're flipping the board over, get someone to assist you or you'll scratch the hell out of the sign!Oh yes and one other thing:Make sure you have a fan running if the board is flat(parallel to the ground)or it'll take forever to dry.Something about the solvents in the air settling on the surface and keeping it wet. Hope this helps.
Yep...One-Shot. I buy the pre-primed MDO at my local supply house. Anything'll stick to it...One-Shot just covers the best. A little mineral spirits or Naptha or turps to thin it a bit...should be about the consistency of melting ice cream (different colors require more or less thinner...it's all trial and error ). Hope this helps...call if you need some more help.
Nothing important here just wanna try my hand at it. Kinda dress up the shop. If I had money I would just buy ya'lls stuff. Maybe later....
hmmmmm......not really. Ummmm..need anything else? Hey, where can I get a good pic for a Tiki? I wanna do a 6 foot tiki for my first outing. I searched google and got a bunch of crap mainly.
Tikis are tough (for me anyways)...I'll p.m. you some links and I'm sure somebody else will have some for you. Bet you wish you hadn't sent that One-Shot down with Crease, huh? As for car stuff....hmmmmm? Gas tank for a jalopy style hot rod, maybe?
Not to hijack this or anything but Barnett, what kind of rear bones are you hunting? I have access to just about anything and would definately be interested in a trade. I'll cover the shipping or just bring 'em to Texas when I come. Thanks, JH
