I'd like to find out what everyone has for tips on selecting a barnyard find.
That does everyone look for, good or bad? What's your top tip?

I look for a barn with a 32 Ford in it. If its not a roadster or a 3 window coupe, I just go to the next barn! Been over 50 years, but I'm sure to score soon............OLDBEET

Depends on what you are looking for. In Minnesota as long as you have sheet metal below the door handles you have yourself a damm solid project. Clay

    I'm kinda curious as well.

You guys just snoop around people's barns? or go up to thier house and ask if they have any old cars in thier barns - "your doing a research project"???

make sure to dye your hair six different colors, wear lots of studded/chain jewelry and when going to a dairy farm make sure you tell them about your very strict vegan diet and how you don't eat ANY meat products. that will get them to show you into their back field so you can see all the cars they have hidden back their. That is right before they shoot you and dump you into one of em....

Always remember: You'll never know unless you ask. I must be weird or maybe just nuts, but wherever I go I am constatly looking on the side of garages, barns, etc. for old cars hiding. If I see one, I'll just go up to the door and ask if it for sale. If they say no, at least I know where it is and I can alway scome back in a couple months and ask again. I might even leave them my number. But really most cars i have found because I was going out to look at another car or parts for sale, then you see something else stashed in the corner or around the wall. Bottom line my eyes are always scowering the countryside. :)

I live in the upper midwest so when on any sort of long trip I'll take the back roads and kep my eyes peeled. There are alot of old farmers out there that don't know what they have. If I see something I may take a detour up their driveway. It always makes the drive more interesting.

This one sat in a backyard in Imperial Beach, California since 1968 until last year. You never know where they're going to be....

  17. believe it or not...riding a bicycle in town in some older parts of town will surprise you....the one car garages with the little windows to peek into, the sheds tucked alongside the house, the briar patch in the back yard (where my convert was found)..etc. what i'm getting at is that sometimes we travel too damned fast and we miss stuff, so slowing down the means of travel helps a bunch IMHO. :)

_I_ think that's normal... however Michelle thinks I'm nosy! :)

    My rules of thumb are:
    • be nice
    • don't lowball
    • if they say it's not for sale, walk away, and come back a different day
    • have cash in hand (the guy I bought my truck from told me there were three different guys promising to come back with $$, but never did)
    • which brings up don't promise anything you can't follow through on
    • don't leave a mess in the yard/barn where the vehicle was... clean up after yourself, or at least offer to... they can always turn you down.
    • since you're in MN, look in the winter... the summer sucks, because all the foliage covers the cars up.

Doing this stuff has gotten me a couple of cars, and lots of motorcycles over the years. ;)

    Rule #1

Do not snoop around without going to the house FIRST and seeing if your welcome.

ha ha had a crazy hillbilly burst his door open and jump out on the porch screaming and yelling at us like a madman once. I learned my lesson.

    New tip...
Make friends with the guys that go through town and put the "abandoned vehicle" stickers on windows of cars that are about to get skooshed!

let's just say the car sitting in front of my shop is very off topic, and very, very nice.

Where exactly is your barn, and whats in it, so I know to say away from it.;)

  26. I'm not sure I understand your question. It seems to imply that there are so many barn finds that it's a buyers market. If so, where exactly are you?

Not a barnyard, but as close as you can get is the OC in So. Cal...On Katella ave. in Cypress years ago, you could just make out the tail lights under an old ripped tarp, with an old H2O heater on the roof of it.....a 1966 Chevelle SS Very GOOD condition ..........So we venture up to the door and the lil Asian Bastard stars SCREAMING "CAR NO 4 SALE..CAR NO 4 SALE...YOU COME BACK HERE NO MORRRR........We came back 3 more times with cash over the next 4-5 years..same answer...then one day it was gone...I guess it just takes the right time, and "ROSSA RUCK" to be the one that scores ...
