In my day job I buy and sell high end European Sports Cars to support
my Hot Rod habit. Prices right now are very high for the best of
anything, whether they be sports cars, muscle cars or hot rods with
period history. Cars, like most things on the planet are cyclical in
value. They go down in price, but almost always come back higher than before. That's why I always tell people to buy something you
LOVE, so that when you open the garage door you get a 'chubby'
and say thank god I've got this car. Look at BJ, most buyers are in
their 50's & 60's. The older guys who used to like Model A's and such are dying off, which is why Model A's are now worth more as hot rods than stockers. This is the first year in over 20 that I'm not going to BJ, I'd rather stay home and work on my 5W Hiboy. As far as the prices at BJ go, never underestimate the power of an open bidder's bar, and two guys with the money in a ******* contest. You can only hope to be the seller at that point.

I think the thing you need to remember most about B-J buyers is they are not "car guys". 99% of them saw B-J on tv, thought it would be fun to bid on a car on tv and decided to come this year. They don't read Hemmings, they don't drive their cars and most find out after the fact they have been royally screwed. B-J is a place for muscle cars, but not the place. What a lot of people dont' know is in the weeks before, during and after Barrett Jackson every other high end auction company is having a sale in Scottsdale too. There is a company called Russo and Steele that really focuses their auctions on muscle cars. That is where the real nice muscle cars go. Then of course RM and Kruse also hold auctions that range in everything from antiques to late model collectibles. Don't get me wrong, there are deals to be had (especially on the street) for the average joe but most of it is a little higher. And don't even get me started on bidder and seller commission rates.....
But I will be watching. I prefer to watch alone to stew but have agreed to go to as HRLC says a "BJ viewing party" Saturday night.
As Boones said, just sit back, relax and enjoy the car show!
Oh, and one more thing, whoever said B-J doesn't affect our buying market on cars is unfortunately WAY wrong.

The Lincoln hitting the curtains was pretty sweet, you could tell they cut away from the cameras, not sure if they should show that or not.

I didn't get to see all of it, but I did see the '65 Mustang sell for $6K, and it was owned by the guy who named the Mustang "Mustang". Nice red paint but a 6 with torn up seats. Still, I'd drive that. The Dodge pickup for 15K seemed like a nice truck for the money also. Beats hauling stuff around in a used 3 year old used car lot truck for the same money.

I like to watch it, it's fun and I get to see some really rare ****. Does it really matter to anyone how much they go for?

And the prices on original Hemi cars and **** like that might come down from where it's at now, but they're never going to be $15K again sitting on used car lots. I'm not going to sit on the couch for the next 20 years waiting for the prices to be ultra-cheap so I can go buy a whole bunch of them (won't happen) I'm buying and building what I want now so I can use them for the next 20 years.

The people spending big bucks on the BJ stuff to inflate their egos are the same ones that have had their wives spend thousands on beanie babies that are now sitting in their ba*****t not worth the stuffing that their made of.

Every market has its highs and lows.............I personally have a ba*****t full of diecast and hotwheels cars that are now worth nothing.

As I watch the prices and the bidding at B J, I see more of, "I got more money than you," going on. In my business, my customers are building and buying collector cars and selling their stocks at this time. They are saying the the baby boomers are keping the price up on these cars and we can expect another 5-15 years of good times in the market.

That black 64 TBird that went for $35k was CLEAN!

60,000 original miles and looked like it came off the showroom floor. The announcers next to the car couldnt find any evidence that it was re-painted either.

Does anyone know whether or not the Hagerty Fantasy Bid is open to Canadians this year? I looked on the Speed website, but couldn't find anything on it.

    Thanks!

i'd have to agree with meatball, i went last year and it was great checking out the real cl***ic cars and seeing them in there stock configuration. i met some real nice car owners and i learned a lot, and as far as the announcers not knowing anything thats ********, i know that steve on the stage is one of the smartest car guys ive ever talked to. i didnt buy a car, but if i had that kind of money i sure would have... i enjoyed seeing someone buy there dream car, GOOD FOR THEM !!!

  14. My favorite quote from the commentator on the 69 Camaro Yenko clone " that S.Y.C. decal on the headrest stands for Yenko Sports Car". I about fell out of my chair...that was cl***ic.

There's too many variables. Not all the same bidders are there everyday. I've seen great cars go cheap, and **** cars, like clones go high. Go figure. It would interesting to see a RPU on there. How about an unfinished shoebox. Still,I enjoy watching.

That '41 Ford Coupe was a POS! 125k invested,WTF! The shop that built that thing made a REAL profit. Can't wait to see that green,S****e,that Alice Cooper is selling. I've seen that car. It's ****. Some guy is gonna think he's bought a real treasure. Hate those gl*** wanna-be's. NOT gl*** cars, but gl*** clones of famous cars.

  16. On tonight's episode, one of their experts was supposedly telling you how to identify '56 Chevys. He pointed to the FRONT grill and said, "The '56s have these square TAIL-lights".

On an earlier episode, an expert stated that a 409 wasn't really a special engine because it was essentially "just a truck engine".

And one announcer got all excited when he found out a car had Boyds wheels on it, and decided that suddenly that now it was a "REAL Hot Rod".

  19. I sure hope it's true. People don't think it affects us little guys, but it does. The "ripple" effect is stronger than you'd think. Like they say, rising tide floats ALL boats.
