    panic

Not to defend him specifically, but here's what causes them to do this: they discover that someone who just asked "can you sign my book - it's for my son who's dying of cancer?"

...and then sells it in the same room for $20.

If someone is going to make money selling signed copies, it should start with the author.

I have to think it was for charity as well. I was at world of wheels a couple of years ago and he signed a hotwheels collector set for me free of charge.

Might have been since I winked at him though, cause he gave me his number too. Just kidding of course.

Sam Barris was the artist. George Barris was and is the promoter...self-promoter. I never liked, that in all I've ever read or heard George say, I've only heard him utter his late brother's name maybe once. Again...self promoter. Me me me me I I I I me me me ME.

I always thought autographs were kind of retarded anyway. Unless it's a signature on a check, I never got the point it's perceived value. It's like some kind of proof that you had some brush with greatness or something. There aren't many hero's in the world but there are a lot of publicized people that simply have better jobs than we do. Having those people sign something doesn't mean much to me. I guess I'm weird.

I have five autographs in my collection. You won't know any of them. I had the five nurses from the NIC Unit at St. Francis South sign a blanket for my youngest daughter after they saved her life. I thought she might want to know who the real heros are someday.

Shame they can't get a TV show and get paid big money but then again, not everyone is in this life for the publicity. Thank God.

The whole autograph scene has become an "industry" over the last couple of decades, much due to the advent of the internet (uh, EBay) and also due to the "trade show" and "convention" business becoming it's own hungry enterprising animal of commerce... Whether you're going to a Sci-Fi convention or to see a professional ball player appear at the grand opening of a local laundromat, you're most likely to be asked for a monetary fee in order to receive an autograph... George Barris has contributed so much to the world of custom cars, I don't know the reason for him absolutely insisting on money, but possibly there is a reason that we are not aware of... Much like Von Franco, if somebody (especially kids) approaches me at the strip and asks for me to sign their Drag Racing Underground tee-shirt, or a Chrome Smoke & Fire record, or a BIG STICK record/cd, or a book I'm in, or ANYTHING for that matter, I feel flattered and gladly do it for FREE-- But that's me, some folks simply want to "get paid" for their signature, and quite frankly, in this world of "collectibles gone wild", I guess those people (like George Barris) have their reasons, and it's certainly their right to be that way-- However, on the other side of the coin, if you DON'T want to PAY for their signature, it's also your right to say "thanks but no thanks" and walk away... "The Doc" (Celebrity Drag Racing Authority & Visionary)...

this is totally off topic while being on topic.

Ricky Carmichael is a hero to some in the motocross world. I worked for a company that consulted with Suzuki on his suspension. I brought an old MX jersey of mine to a race and asked him to sign it. He told me he would after the race.

He went out and won the race by lapping everyone(his last Unadilla race). He came back to his motor home pulled off his jersey, signed it, and tossed it to me.

Of course I'm more stoked on him than most of you, but that's a cl***y move. Only washed out jerks charge for their autograph.

My experiance with Mr. Barris was at Viva about 4 years ago. I tried to get a picture of him signing something for somebody else from a distance. The flunky that was there "helping" him, told me there would be a charge if I took any additional pictures of him without consulting them first. Well you know I didn't take any additional pictures of him after that, and ****canned the one I did take. I've never run into that with anybody else in the car world or any other celeb's.

  22. I got his autograph in about 2000 on a KOA hat and tee shirt. No charge or hint of it. He was very nice to me and asked me if I had any questions. We talked for abit, It was a great experiance for me. It really wasn't deathly important to me to get his autograph, he was sitting there so i asked politley. Getting his autograph for free or not, to me, dosn't have anything to do with his major contribution to our way of life(hobby). He is who he is. Who cares, I'm in this deal because i like the cars, the personality of the legendary builders makes no difference. The cars they built in the 50's does. If George barris' personality turns you away from the tons of great cars he and his employees were reponsible for maybe you should take up fishing or some other hobby, Because you are totally missing the point.

I'm starting to wonder who signed the jacket that I thought Barris signed!
No handlers, no h***le, no charge, no ****!
I have told the autograph story to people who never heard of George Barris though, that's hard for me to imagine...but true...
this a pretty weird thread...but I like it...

Sounds like there are two George Barris' criss-crossing the country, one is an evil twin.

.....and what’s all this talk about putting your pants on one leg at a time? I just park my *** on the edge of the bed and roll backwards …I then pull BOTH pants legs on at the same time and simultaneously jettison myself into the air, pulling up my pants mid flight and zipping up as my feet touch the floor. I thought everyone did it that way….hey, maybe I am better than everybody else !!

Back on topic…I once observed a group of adoring fans waiting patiently for Don Prudhome’s autograph in front of his empty pit stall. His car had just gotten eliminated and they were dragging it back in….Prudhomme screamed at all of them to “get the **** out of the way before you get run over” .….lol…talk about bursting some bubbles.
Hey these guys are just people and they’re gonna act like people.

so 'ya say yere a young fella...huh? Simultaneously jettisoning starts to fade after a while...then the survivors go to one leg at a time deal...
and 10-4 on the evil-twin idea, but I still think the other one is a space ailen...that's what the voices keep tellin' me...

It's pretty much been established that Barris is less than desireable through this thread with 90 posts.

So let's hear and see some more of the great stuff from the Gene and Larry show on that other thread that has only 26 posts.

Just my thoughts.....I'm looking for more positive info on the big day in the desert. It's a little far for me, so I can only rely on those of you who were there.

    Thanks.

  30. ed roth was the man.
met him at the cleveland auto rama a couple of years before he died.
no one was around his table.
i thanked him for being the reason i m into hot rodding.
talked to him for about 20 mins.
he told me to take any pics i wanted off the table and he'd sign em.
i asked him how much i owed him and he said nothin,
    free.
roth had more cl*** in his pinky than barris has in his whole body.
