I look at it like this, I like getting my photo taken with car folks that I admire and respect. I then blow them up to an 8x10 and put them in an envelope till I see that person again. I then ask them to sign it. Once home I frame it and hang it on the computer room wall.....kinda like a wall of fame thing. They are great conversation starters PLUS they are great memories of some wonderful people.

I'll share two things with you guys, a few years ago I asked Jimmy White to sign a photo that I brought of him and I together that was taken the year before. It was hard to me to believe him when he said this but he told me I was the first person to ever ask for his autograph. I respect his work and me asking for his autograph is kinda of non-verbal way of letting him know this. I think this goes for all the "famous" folks, asking for an autograph is letting the person know you like, repsect or admire them and in return the person who is signing his name when asked is showing you he appreciates you being a "fan".

Another quick story, sometimes those "famous" people also enjoy receiving things from us mere mortals. Case in point, I already had a signed photo of me and VonFranco together but another photo was taken later that turned out so much better so I had that one enlarged and gave it to VonFranco. He was genuinely surprised that I did this and stated no one ever brings me anything, everyone always wants something. So keep this in mind the next time you plan on seeing someone you admire and try to give them alittle token of something you think they might enjoy.

I've got more stories on giving famous people photos of us together, been doing it for years and trust me they remember you when you stop by and say hi to them again. Kinda makes me feel more like a friend instead of a fan if you know what I mean.

Be a giver in this world and it will come back to you many times over.

Not true, not true at all. I've never paid for anyone's autograph nor have I ever changed.;)

I've got his, how much you give me for it??? :p :D

    and I promise I won't charge you for my autograph.:D :D :D

Barris is Barris, If you want his autograph give the old guy 10 bucks. He's old now, I'm only 63 ,if people wanted me to sit around all day and sign things I'd want to get paid, thats hard work, and be nice at the same time, be worth 10 bucks to me. Daryll Starbird was at Ocean City this weekend, he charged 10 bucks, but signed on a picture of Predicta or Lil Coffin

I have two George Barris autographs and they have very different stories. The first is a large Barris Crest Tin Sign. It was the "Trophy" for a car show that I entered. It is hand signed "Best of Show, Best Wishes George Barris". It is pretty cool to me for being recognition from Barris for a car I built.
The other is a signed Batmobile 8X10. I was at a car show and George was there with a friend of mine doing the celebrity thing. Randy introduced him to me and George asked if I wanted an autograph. I told him I wasn't really into that type of thing, maybe he should save it to give to one of the kids. He asked who he should make it out to, again I said no big deal. He persisted so I told him to make it out to the shop, which he did. It hangs on the bulletin board.
Both times he was very cordial and seemed fine to me.

As for those that have decided to berate Boyd here. I knew him on a personal level. I worked in his shop when it was at this house, before he was a household name. He was a very driven and talented guy but was quite the introvert. He really was not comfortable in "Celebrity" type situations, it just wasn't in his personality. He was not a good speaker nor did he seem to like any of that. If he seemed or acted like a jerk it was because he really had a difficult time with it, a real struggle. As more people pulled at him for time etc it only got worse. If you had ever gone to dinner with him, like I had you would know he was a very kind and likable fella.

He's alway been really nice to me when I got him to sign stuff. He always wanted to pose for pictures too with no problems but I saw no handler. Maybe he's been kidnapped and its an evil robot George Barris.

  7. Ya know, I've been to events where they have some TV star like Henry Winkler or Adam West or whoever, where the event charges you $10 a shot to go through the line and the money basically pays for bringing that person there. I even went to some comic con a couple years ago where .. I can't think of her name, she played Catwoman and was the green slave chick in Star Trek (remember that thread?) .. and it was like $30 for her to sign something. So like I said it may not always be up to Barris that it costs $10 to get the autograph.

    Really?

Do you know the history of George the photographer? do you know if it wasn't for his photography America would not have seen half the cars ever built.. he lauched careers of guys like Dean Jeffries, Bill Hines, **** Dean, Larry Watson and the list goes on... how about the marketing of the Barris name? how about all the tech articles in the little pages that he did???? that taught people how to customize there own ride...

I love the bashing that Barris always gets.... he's 85 years old and still works every day and attends car shows on the weekend...

As for him driving a rental?? what do you expect the Batmobile?? and I doubt he said
that the town was **** and kicked some dudes quarter pannel.... Pllllllllease!!

So hell if the guy ask for 10 bucks give it to him... its the least you could do for that person that has done so much for us.

I have met Boyd on several occasions and hewas fairl cordial. I saw him at a local cruise after driving one of his Boydsters cross country, if I remember correctly. I could tell he was not real comfortable with everyone gathering around him and pelting him with questions and autograph requests. I did not think too badly of him for it. My Dad and I visited him old shop in Orange County and he was a really nice guy. Showed us around a little and let us poke around.

The only autograph stories I have (I am not into the autograph thing either) was at the NHRA Museum release of the Hot Rod story by Alex Xydias. I was able to get Tommy Ivo, Alex and Wally Parks to sing the CD cover. All three were really nice down to earth guys.

Give me ten dollars and I won't sign anything you bring me, instantly making it worth more than if I had. I can hear it now on Antiques Road show from the future... "Well, if Spike hadn't signed it, it would be worth 5 billion space dollars..but since he did, it's not worth anything". Bwahahahahahaha

I've got 2 autographs. Both big Daddy's Gartlis and Roth. I paid for Roths because it included a piece of his art. Gartlis' included the shirt that he signed.

I was very disappointed when Buffalo Bob wanted 10 bucks for his autograph several years ago. You have to be over 60 to have any clue who that might be. I would have stood in line to get it but not for 10 bucks!

As a little kid, I was star struck by certain people. Thought they were bigger than life. Then in the hot rod biz, I came to know some "celebs" and some of them signed some stickers for me, as kind of a joke, you know. Well, it got to be "a thing" and I plastered the headliner of my hot rod with a couple hundred signed stickers, about 25 years ago. Now they're fading, so they're inside the house, on my fridge.
It was all done in fun, but that silly project allowed me to make friends with some people I probably wouldn't have otherwise met. Some became close friends. Now several of them have died and their signatures may be worth some money, but the thought sickens me.
This thread has been thought provoking. That's a good thing. Viva La HAMB.

Ironic that your ***le is bigdaddy! I asked Stanley Mouse to autograph my glovebox door a bunch of years back.
    "$100."
"Nah,Ed Roth signed for free, never mind."
Who is Mouse compared to Ed Roth?
