Barry Bryant age 46 from Anderson, Calif., died driving the family-owned Tom Thumb Special, Chevrolet-powered Compe***ion Coupe competing at SpeedWeeks on the Bonneville Salt Flats.

The Sunday afternoon accident occurred when his vehicle went out of control, going airborne and crashing at the five-mile mark while traveling approximately 200 mph. Bryant was transported by ambulance to Intermountain Medical Center in Salt Lake City, p***ing away before arriving at the hospital. Seven of the Bryant family are members of the Bonneville 200 MPH Club.

Every once in a while we get reminded that racing is a dangerous sport. I am sure, with the experience this family has, they were aware of the risks. That certainly doesn't lessen the blow when a tragedy like this strikes the racing community.

My heart goes out to his immediate and extended family. R.I.P.

  6. I remember meeting Tom and his boys in the 80's when we were running the Original Golden Rod 990 and Swamp Rat 33 and he still had the original Pierson Bros. '34 coupe.
I remember them not only as dedicated racers, but as really good people.
As a man who has also lost a son too soon, my heart and prayers go out to the entire family.

I left right before that happened. When we left, my buddy and I mentioned that we were glad no major incendents happened.

The quest for speed has always held danger. It's sad to hear when someone p***es in that quest. My condolences to family and friends. RIP

  19. Losing family is always hard especially when they have so much life left but racing IS dangerous ,and all who climb into a ****pit accept that risk otherwise they wouldn't be there. He died doing what he loved to do and Iam sure the family will take comfort from that. My deepest sympathies , Rob

Please dont think I'm sick or demented by saying this, but he went quick, painlessly, and doing what he loved. Probably with a huge smile on his face and a level 99 adrenaline rush... We should all be so lucky... At least I hope I am some day. Sure kicks the hell outa rotting away in a nursing home.

My deepest condolences go out to the family for their loss.

Losing Barry was the reality slap to an otherwise perfect Speed Week. Condolences to the Bryant family from all the Gosson Bros...

Man, sorry to hear that. I knew Tom Bryant when he ran his highboy Model A roadster with the Road Runners in the early 60's. One of the good guys. My thoughts are with him.

Prayers out to the Barry's. The quest for speed has driven this family many years and there is always the chance of severe accidents. The love of the sport keeps this family going . Condolences to all!
