Ha ha, yeah, I hear ya. Actually we had the best of both worlds. Spot repairs were done in lacquer, real hard to screw that up. But completes we used enamel unless it was a "show job" (lacquer on those) and you had to be a painter to get it to lay down and gloss without runs, streaking or mottling. Hard to fix if you screwed up, wouldn't be employed too long if it happened often! The other thing about painters today, when did it become the norm to send a panel or something to the paint store so they could match the paint? Geez, first thing my first boss taught me was how to tint and match paint, told me I had to learn it if I was going to be a painter. A few years ago I was hired to come in and match paint for a local paint store, they said it was normal for the body shops to send panels over. Of course the guys at the paint shop couldn't match paint either, hence my employment.
    Sorry, getting off subject.

  2. I hit Alburquerque occasionally since I'm just a few miles east of ya on I40. If you have a regular shop pm me your address I'd like to stop in and say Hi sometime.

I first started painting with lacquer used that for years painted my coupe one time with Enron. The last time it was painted used bc/cc. Now I would not use anything else. The convertible is painted with bc/cc, painted in 2000, and it still looks great.

After 4 pages of this discussion, I'll stick to Lacquer. Sooo much easier

  5. I do base coat clear coat and add a little color to the clear (takes that glassy look out) and make it look like signal stage
    B/C will hold up better

I'd argue against that one all day long. Single stage might fade a bit over time, nothing a little wax or maybe a buff and wax won't bring back. Once that clear breaks down, starts to get cloudy, it done for. Just look at about any ten year old car with it's factory BC/CC. I'm talking about single stage acrylic urethane, not lacquer of course.

  7. Before long there will be no choice! Water base paints are coming to a paint store neer you . Single stage acrylic urethane, and lacquer , and even or good old chemical B/C will go the way of R-12 Freon and soon to follow R-134. even to the hobby painter they will be fazed out. Thanks EPA!!!!!!

  8. Yep!!!
It's really hard to beat the richness, genuineness, and depth of a nice SS cut and buffed paint job.

Thank you all for your opinions and tips. The reason I asked this question is the fact that a lot of people I talk to and/or work with are astounded that I want to use a single stage paint on my truck. As most if not all of you are aware, a lot of folks like to use base/clear on every vehicle they paint. I'm not neccesarily against that, but I like the softer look of single stage paint on older vehicles, that are being

That is, vehicles that are being restored. Now modifed or custom stuff is another story, and I see some great looking paints jobs on here and out there, on some really nice rides.

Some great info in this discussion. I’ll be painting my roadster in the near future, it will be a dark blue metallic (‘64 Buick Diplomat Blue). I was thinking of using single stage catalyzed acrylic enamel. I liked the previous tip about adding 30% clear to the final coat(s). In the past I’ve put two coats of clear on since I’ve never had a spray booth. That allowed a little material to safely sand out the bug footprints if needed. I’m no pro, I’ve painted probably eight cars total over the course of thirty years. I’ve sprayed lacquer, acrylic enamel and urethane and found acrylic enamel gave me the best results with amount of work and anxiety, the urethane was the worst (probably my inexperience coupled with cheap paint)
Any thoughts on adding 30% clear vs doing separate coats?

I totally agree, there is a lot to be said for good “rattle can”Black Semi-gloss. Good body prep. and buff as needed for a “Hot Rod “.

Thanks all for all you have written about bc/cc vs. single stage. I am also in the process of doing rust repair on my 56 F100 and will be painting soon. Well now it is clear as mud! The answer depends on who you ask!!
