    Hello All, Newbie Here

Though I would start this up to help everyone out with the age old proglem of getting the initial timing set up, so that we hear no more Backfiring at start-up attempts.

Feel Free to add all your tricks you have learned.

“Small Block Chevy and “others” when you align your timing marks at the cam/crank gear set you can drop in the distriburator and align the rotor to point directly at the # 6 Spark Plug wire terminal, and Whall’a your engine basic ignition timing is set up correctly. You will have NO MORE BACKFIREING at start-up. This will work on many other engines too.

Check it out as you disassemble your next engine, align the cam/crank timing marks and see where the rotor points before you pull the distriburator out.

I don’t have all the space to list all of them here, so check it out for your self’s, on your engines of choice. It will prevent many headaches.

Great Site, I really enjoy all the info here

    Take Care,

    Dusty

Another handy tip if you can't find your timing light. Say the timing is supposed to be set at 10 degrees BTDC, align the crankshaft timing mark with the 10 degree mark on the pointer. Connect an OHM meter across the points and twist the distributor until the meter moves off "0" ohms and lock down the distributor.

Static timing is now set at 10 degrees.
