gunna make a tank for the coupe, I want to know how far between fillups, so I made a cardboard box to figure the size and shape of the tank, it's going to be two foot ten (2.83) by one foot six (1.5) by ten inches (0.83) it will have a notch cut out of it to clear the trunk lid the notch will be two inches (0.17) deep, eight inches (0.67) wide and run the length of the tank (2.83) I know there are 7.48 gallons in a cubic foot and I hope to get eight miles to the gallon, so, 2.83 x 1.5 x 0.83 - (0.17 x 0.67 x 2.83 x 0.5) x 7.48 x 8 = 201.44 miles per tank I think I can live with that. and it looks like I'll have just enough room for a clean pair of shorts in there too!
60's ....just a suggestion ....how much room ya got from the trunk floor to the top of the rear ?( or whatever is highest under there) .....reason being ---I used a Mustang drop-in tank (66 to 73) in my 32 and it cleared the corvette rear and gave me a REAL trunk and held 16 gallons..... jersey skip
skipperman, believe me, I have thought about this for some time. I've been working on this car for damn near eighteen years. there is some room behind the rear end but it would mean losing about ten gallons. the tank in the trunk will hold 25 gallons and I prolly couldn't fit much more then 15 under. the big block is kinda thirsty and I don't want to have to worry about where the next gas station is all the time. here's under
But, can you go that far without stopping? Looking at the cardboard mockup, it looks bigger than 25 gallons. Maybe not, looks like you have the math well in hand. Fwiw - I convert to cubic inches and use 231 as a constant to get the gallons.
I do the same as C9 to figure gallons. Man Paul I thought it said Gas Mask. Gonna go give the ol' peepers a rest.
[ QUOTE ] Fwiw - I convert to cubic inches and use 231 as a constant to get the gallons. [/ QUOTE ] I work everything in tens, hundredths and thousandths of a foot at work so it seems easier to me in feet. Paul
Dam! Paul, I thought you was throwin some new math at us. I think the cubic inch formula is best but why would you want 25 gallons? Got a piss tube through the floor boards?
that's exactly why this damn car has taken so long to build, just when I think I have it all figured out, I gotta stop and think about it some more! things would be easier if the tank were under the car, wouldn't need a firewall to go racing, would have room for more stuff in the trunk, would have to stretch my legs more often... I'll make another cardboard tank tomorrow and think about it some more. Paul
cut the floor behind that shock crossmember and have it all...........tank dropped down/thru and underneath partially/more trunk space .........easy for me to say -Im not there!
It will certainly work, and I can tell you from experience (my roadster holds about 24 gallons) that a big tank is a good deal. My only comment would be to consider making the tank taller and further forward. The volume of usable trunk space would remain the same, but it would be a better shape (sort of cylindrical instead of flat). It is hard to tell from the pic exactly how much room you have there, but I think any space you can make to hold your stuff will turn out to be useful.

[/ QUOTE ] Make the tank full width and vertical behind the seats. Kinda like a rear firewall, That way you can have a trunk and you can get it as big as you want it. Make it stainless with a drain plug.
[ QUOTE ] ---I used a Mustang drop-in tank (66 to 73) in my 32 ..... jersey skip [/ QUOTE ] Does anyone have the dimensions on a Mustang tank? I need to find a rectangular tank to fit under the bed of my 32 p/u. [ QUOTE ] Fwiw - I convert to cubic inches and use 231 as a constant to get the gallons. [/ QUOTE ] I use Paul's method in feet also, but it is the same thing as the 231 conversion. There are 1728 cubic inches in a cubic foot, so 1728 / 7.48 = 231. Neal
the one in a 69 mustang is ...30"X21"X7"( the HOLE it fits into--has a 1" lip to mount)( 7" is the DEEPEST part --it angles up front of car to rear) .......you can get deeper ones ( more gallonage) out of a cougar (73 is the most gallons) jersey skip
hey paul, dont want to hijack your post , but give me a call tonight if you can, couple of little things to decide on the motor,it came together very nice,i quit posting about it , i got tired of digging it up off page 15 tank looks good, lots of weight above the rear for traction

[/ QUOTE ] Not enough room is there? Pushing the seat forward doesn't seem like a good option unless you've got stubby legs. I was thinking along the lines of an MGT-series tank, but that's only 13.5 gallons (hang-on, I'm Canadian, what the hell's a gallon? what's a cubic foot?! )
[ QUOTE ] but why would you want 25 gallons? [/ QUOTE ] Easily answered during a dark night lost in this big farming valley with a 16 gallon fuel cell that only holds about 12 gallons. So how, you ask, does a guy who lives in a big farm valley with north/south, east/west oriented two laners get lost? The short answer, drop onto one of the few diagonal highways in a strange town way after dark (after an out of town BBQ-car show) and launch yourself into an overcast night where the Sierra to the east is hidden by the overcast and keep on truckin cuz you're sure you're right and Sweetie who gets lost now and then is wrong when she's right and you're wrong. (Did I say that right? Heck, I'm married, what the hell do I know?) It was a long hour and a half of running around strange roads with maybe a quarter tank of gas in a 10-13 mpg car. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Neal, I've seen some small and not too deep gas tanks sitting inside vans at the junkyard. Not sure why the tank gets pulled and left behind on these vehicles, but it must be in the way of something the van guys want. I'm guessing some of them may be 8" deep, 30" wide and 24" fore and aft. That calculates out to 25 gallons if I did the math right. I think most of the vans carried about 22 gallons so the tank could be even smaller.
