I think I am needing a 1310 to s44 conversion joint. I know I can order this, but I have a local Auto Zone, Oreillys, and Advance all open tomorrow that I would like to verify and pick up local. Problem is, they are zero help at the counter without an item number but I think all of them carry some conversion joints. Anyone know a part number for this joint that crosses with these folks? I know Speedway has it, but I'd like to put it in tomorrow. Thanks guys

My local oreillys has an old timer with 40 years of experience who has helped me with such things, a treasured angel.

  7. I take part numbers with me
I got an output bearing for my r10 overdrive this week. All I had to do was give em a number.
It isn’t dumbed down. Just different
The customer also has the responsibility to know what they want

yup....part of building hot rods, is knowing what parts to use. And that kind of requires knowing what they were used in originally, so you can give the parts counter guy an application.

I prefer just giving them a part number, that I figured out myself, and checked that they have it in stock.

  9. The guy behind the counter is 17.
I showed him how to measure the bearing from the specs on his computer
I couple days later I was in there for wipers. Another 17 year old behind the counter asked if I needed installation.
So we walked outside and I taught him how to install em.
The problem is education. A lack of it from the older generation expecting these 17 years olds to have the same experiences they did at 17.
At some point in time you either become part of the problem or part of the solution

I print out the page from their web site and bring it with me. The experienced help appreciates the easy transaction.

I live a little south of @squirrel and deal with the same parts stores. The local NAPA franchise was bought by the local Ford/GM/Stellantis/Hyundai/Kia/Nissan/Honda dealer - I no longer trade there...

p.s. Circle the part number for the "new person".

  13. I worked for too many years at a dealership parts counter. A phone customer needed some precise measurements for a part I had in stock. So I walked out to the shop and asked one of our techs if he had some calipers I could borrow to make the measurement. He looked at me, kind of puzzled, and said "What? You mean like brake calipers?"

I avoided even letting him do oil changes on my vehicle.
