I am using a pop cooler for a battery box insde of the car. I am using a sealed battery but not a gel type, it is a liquid filled battery. Do I need vent holes in the sealed battery box? Thanks Dale
I am doing the exact same thing on my 50 Chevy. Putting the cooler in the trunk & I figured I was gonna have the cables routed thru the back of the cooler & thought just a couple of extra holes back there would suffice. Or if you have a cooler with the drain on the bottom could you just remove the drain & leave an empty hole there? Will be interested in the answers that come up. Steve
I drilled an extra hole in the bottom of my floor/cooler bottom and siliconed in some 3/8 tubing for a vent.
I guess the first thread you started didn't get enuf replies?? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=170236
I would think that it would be a good idea to vent it to the outside of the car with a piece of tubing or hose. .....Bob
Always vent the battery box for safety. 2 vent holes are better, and a road draft tube in one to create a pressure differential is even better. Vent thru the bottom as mentioned, and as a side benefit, you can hose the box out if ever needed. I've had this setup (metal tool box) in an OT hatchback for nearly 20 years, zero battery odor.
yes, batteries need to be vented. they emit g***es when charging, and those g***es are flammable. i would vent it outside the trunk, like you described...a hose through the trunk floor.
Or, if you used an OPTIMA battery NO vent needed. Plus, they can be mounted in any position. (sideways, upside down, etc.)
Take a look at the second page on this site, very helpful info on replacement battry types and characteristics. It begins with: Note from Scott Thomas... http://www.miata.net/garage/battery.html
