Looking for some battery mounting ideas for my Model A roadster, running 6 volt thinking of mounting under passenger floorboard I would like to see what other have done. thanks
Here's mine in my '29 A. Mounted under the seat (passenger side). You can see the battery box we made to the right of the driveshaft. -Jeremy
If you are not running accessories use a large AMG motorcycle battery. You can mount them sideways or upside down and they don't care 0 maintenance. http://eurotechmotorsports.com/forms/Query.cfm?do=detail&q_part=12V30 I used one in our last build and it works well. If you are interest let me know. I can get you one for about 85.00 delivered.
I run one of these under my seat...mounted sideways. Works great! It will set you back about $100 @ NAPA. http://www.odysseybatteries.com/battery/pc680t.htm
I like to put them under the dash on the r/s. I use the optima too. All the way forward so it's as out of the way as possible and has room to be removed easily. No pix right now of any.
I've got almost an identical mounting in my '31 coupe, except it's more of a tray, rather than a box.A bit hard to get to, but the only possible place. It will take a pretty heavy cable to run power to your engine/etc. make sure you have the right size. Also, to make things easier, I have a horizontal plate mounted to the inside of the frame rail under the passenger seat which holds remote jumper ports (Ron Francis) and a keyed master disconnect switch. And, under my modified running board is a small (1.5x2") plastic lidded port that holds the wires to connect the trickle charger I use when I'm running the car for a while. You can't see anything from up top, it's all pretty accessible and it is pretty clean under the car,too
Thanks for the replies. Is the odyssey battery available in 6 volt? Also I have head of problems with optima tyoe batteries running a generator - any thoughts on that? Thanks
I use one of the combination battery box/ master cylinder mounts that Dave Wilton of M?T Products makes. Goes in the stock location and get to it through the stock hole in the floor boards. Uses a 56 pu mc. Dave may be a little busy these days; he lives up in Paradise, Ca in the middle of one of our many fires.
I am mounting my PC680 under the dash. I welded as plate to mount the fuse pannel to as well. I need be I may brace the dash with it.
Nope, but I will-may be the weekend though-I'm loading up lambs for sale in the morning and work late tomorrow night and Saturday AM.
Here are some photos of how I did my battery mount in a '31 A Coupe. The first one is the plate showing the battery jumper posts. The second is the small box that contains the connector for the trickle charger-it's tucked into the box when I'm driving. The third is the rack that holds the battery. The fourth is the post/switch plate from a different angle and the fifth is a shot of my running boards from the top.
I mounted my Oddessy battery on the inside frame rail on the passenger side with a remote jumper lug on the positive side only since you can ground it whever. The particular size is for a new Harley Vrod.
Anybody hear of problems using an optima when running a 6 volt generator ? Where's the best place to get an optima 6volt? thanks
Since the Optima was designed to be used in early cars and 99% of 6V early cars used a generator I see no problem in using one except the same problems with conventional batteries, maintaining a good ground and making sure the system is working and adjusted properly at all times.
Under body in front of rear axle inside the frame rails. 1/2" x 1" x .090 rectangular tubing. Battery sits on a 1/2" sheet of neoprene. Retained by a 1/4" x 1" aluminum bar with 1/2" neoprene biscuits between bar and battery. Bolts to the frame with 4 easily accessed 3/8" bolts. Running a standard wet cell battery is no big deal. Since the battery is away from engine heat, it doesn't lose much water. Even so, I'm going to put an access plate in the 31 - which has this same battery box - trunk floor.
