Hey all, Looking into air cleaners and like the mid/late 50's GM batwing pictured below. Is anyone running one of the reproductions from eBay? What id like to know is, is it a silencer as well? I am not fond of the the air sucking sound of an open element and would like an oem quality silencer. Just wondering if the batwing repos do that. I am hesitant to post this because I don't want opinions of why I shouldn't mind the carb air sucking sound, I just don't like it and this may be a cool solution Thanks Andrew D. first time that I have heard about this concern/problem. see if you can find a exploded view of this type of air cleaner with top off. study the design and see if it looks like the style of air cleaner that has caused this problem for you. what type of motor & carb do you have?
Ahh the sound of an 80's cop car on the gas. And my moms 74 Plymouth Satellite 4 door that I flipped the air cleaner lid on..... When I was 12. ( mom it will run better !) Oh, I have no idea.
I have had one on my 55 chevy with an edelbrock carb for years. Mainly for the vintage look but I've never really paid much attention to how it actually makes the car sound. But in thinking about it I don't really hear the carburetor noise as much as I do with my 36 with an open element air cleaner. So yes I'd have to say it does probably help. Awesome all!! Thanks! Original caddy filter!? Better check eBay. Ones like in that photo can do $4-8,000. They are INSANELY valuable. Just for fun do an eBay search for "air cleaner" and sort "most expensive first" and be amazed. Andrew D. I have the small version that bitchen cast in aluminium now obrian truckers cast them. Nice piece and I dont hear anything.
There is a company repopping actual dual quad batwings for around 2k to 3k. If you sit next to your car in a lawn chair with a feather duster in your hand this might be for you. But I suspect you are looking for the single 4 barrel cleaner also currently described as "batwing" that you always see in car mags pinstripped. You can get a better one from 'Obrien's Truckers who are a Hamb Vendor. The ones on ebay look alot cheaper, the ones from 'obriens have folded edges and the fit and finish look right. It's $200 to $300. Their aluminum stuff is great too, if I can get down to the bloodmobile and donate 5 Or 6 quarts on my lunch break, I'm all over their finned dual quad covers.
For the eBay price, that thing better stand up and salute you every time you walk by the car. Sent from my SM-G900V using H.A.M.B. mobile app
I saw one of the Ebai ones last fall at a show, they're kinda tinny looking. The Obriens one is nicer. The factory one on my Packard weighs about 30lbs filled with oil. It is SILENT compared to open element tho...
You can see the difference of the single 4 barrel "batwings" right in this pic, Truckers' is way better than the ebay knock off. Whoever is repopping the dual quad batwings is doing a good job, but they are made of resin so I don't know if a restorer would use it or if it would kill the value of a high $ car. 2k seems excessive for a driver, but really what do I know, I haven't got any class or any money. I would guess either would be quieter than an open filter.
I've seen them do 6-8k if I recall. And no, that's not my thing. It has its place but I am a "driver" kind of dude. I'd like a banged up original. And I so want to silence the carb completely if I can. My exhaust sound is nice, don't like the air hissing sound from the carb though Thanks for this info guys. I am going to put my feelers out for a real one and if not, I'll probly get a repro. Andrew D. Well around 8 years ago when I bought it they were goung for about $120. I guess times have changed !?
Wow, only $10,000 , good rubber gasket, and we have to pick it up too? Great deal, maybe he has two, one for a back up, maybe they will throw the second one in for another $9000. Some people on ebay (and CL) are nucking futs! Or am I? Is it possible a Boss Mustang air cleaner with new rattle can paint is worth 10k?
^^^ A remarkable price considering you could have got one unrestored, complete with car for just $176,000. http://www.barrett-jackson.com/Events/Event/Details/1969-FORD-MUSTANG-BOSS-429-FASTBACK-162928 Esp since the original MSRP for the 1969 Boss 429 was $4740. Now THAT is a hedge against inflation. A fellow by the name of Louie King was dragging a 428 Goat big time on weekends. He'd have me do the tuning at the Sunoco station. Anyway, he blew the motor (I bought the long block for $15), and next thing I know, he shows up with a blue 429 Boss. At first I was pissed. Then I got in it, and motored it onto M-15 up onto I-75 and staged a one-man race. Fuck me, what an amazing car!!!
It does work proportionately - these $8-10,000 air cleaners go on cars that are crazy expensive but still.:. I was mind blown when I saw what they go for Andrew D.
