A few weeks ago there was a kick-*** thread about bead rolling. This got me to thinking (scarey thought, I know) Does the panel to be rolled have to be aluminum sheet or can perforated (lotsa tiny holes) aluminum or steel be done too? I want a bug screen for my T truck with the old V8 symbol rolled in it.
I think we all know what perforated means, and yes you can bead roll preforated metal but it's going to be tough to shape the V8.
Thanks rat boy, didn't mean to insult anyones intelligence but a couple metal shops didn't know what that was. One called it "holey" the other one said "we don't know what yer talk'in about bub" Anyway, I thought it would be cool...
if your not to worried about spending a few dollars you could have a fab shop with a CNC turret punch press make you a bug screen, they could punch around your V8, i think it would be tough to see the V8 in a completely perfed. piece of metal. a shop with a lazer could do it as well but tend to be more expensive. i have a 28 pontiac grill i want to use stainless mesh thats been bead rolled, i just plan on doing some straight lines up and down.
Hey, Yeah, something like a V8 symbol would be possible in the material you have described, but would probably be best to press the symbol into the panel. Take a piece of MDF board and draw the symbol out upon the MDF, cut out the design, being careful to make clean cuts, save the pieces you cut to be used as the male portion of the die. Now, glue these to another piece of MDF being careful to glue them clean and straight. Once the cut and glued piece is dry, sandwich a piece of you material between the two pieces of MDF, clamp them together and either press out the design, or use a large hammer and a block of wood, and hammer the pieces of MDF together, going slowly and checking the progress often. When you have the detail of the design pressed/beaten into the material, cut to final shape, as necessary. S****ey Devils C.C. " Spending A Nation Into Generational Debt Is Not An Act Of Comp***ion! Neonloverrob, http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=248326&highlight=kiwi+kev+bead+rolling Check this out and learn. Kiwi Kev is a master of bead rolling.
do some youtube searches for "hammerforming" I love the technique for many applications. If you are going as big as the door panels pictures, I'd probably roll them, but for something smaller, hammerform it.
Kev, the windshield frame looks to be a non-aftermarket item. Got any pics of how the gl*** is fitted/retained/installed? Is it bent up out of channel?
