Installing new bear Claw latches on my 34 Ford five window coupe. My doors are in really great condition and I don't want to "hack" them up needlessly but safety is primary when you have little ones to tote around. Question... ? Where is the best location for the latches while using the original exterior handles? Looks like installing them at the original latch opening might conflict with the handle shaft but I refuse to shave my door handles. Option two is to forgo the dovetails and install them there. I am also retaining the interior door handles. Any hints or suggestions?

I would have to agree with Slag keep the stock latch and add a safety pin. the stock latches are safe. spend the time in making shore the door fits properly and the latch is rebuilt you should not have a problem. and there are a lot of good safety pin set up out there that will ensure you cargo is protected. Sometimes even with the smallest bear claw latch they sell they can be a huge pain to install.
