I'm putting bear claw latches in my 37 Ford sedan and am using the original outside door handles. How is it possible to lock the doors from both the inside and/or outside? I am open to any and all suggestions.

    Thanks

  2. Doors lock on the outside by the key, it disables the handle, not allowing it to turn. They lock on the inside by using a pull handle with a lever to disable it from being able to turn. I don't believe you can lock them both ( inside and outside ) at the same time, no reason to really.

Thanks for the replys but I'm still lost. 1) How does locking the inside lever keep someone from opening the door from the outside? 2) The "power locks" I'm familiar with are solenoids which operate the existing lock mechanism. I'm confused and need more help!!

    Thanks

The inside lock overrides the outside lever. It "freewheels" when the key is not in.

I put bearclaw latches in my '35 sedan doors. I also used the stock handles and the stock right side door lock cylinder. I will dig through my archives for some pictures. I had to fabricate linkage from the right lock cylinder to a lock-pawl on the right door bearclaw. Then I had to also fab some linkage from the original outside handle to operate the bear claw latch. That was the easy part. The drivers side required a bit more planning and designing to make the left door function like a stock door. I wanted to be able to lift the inside handle to lock the door like a stocker as well as push the handle down to open the door. To accomplish this I had to build linkage and another johnson-rod lock pawl and lever ***embly. The pictures are worth a thousand words if I can find which disc I saved them on. VERY FEW of the original parts were used.

The beauty of the whole exercise is that, everything looks and functions exactly like Henry Ford built it....and for five years now it's worked flawlessly.

Thanks Reto, I knew it could be done. The pictures would be greatly appreciated! I can make the original handles operate the latches but am having a hard time locking from inside and outside. In your '35 when locked, one has to enter from the p*** side?

Where to buy those really small sized bear clawa latches.
So many I have seen are the medium or larger sizes which dont really suit an model A purpose.

Haven't looked for Bear Claw Latches recently but I know they did make a version that had provisions for locking.

The Altman easy latch looks great but according to their site--

"No Altman Easy Latch Kit will allow you to lock your door by pushing forward on the interior
handle. It is advised to use electric lock actuators or fabricate your own lock rods".

Wow , who would have thought after thousands of bear claw latches sold and installed, locking the doors would be so much trouble?
