The NHRA needs to embrace it's own history. Listen to what the true fans of the sport want, and let these types of cars race again. I would rather watch this car go down the track at 200 MPH, any day over Schumacher's 334 MPH (1/4 mile... those days are over 1000 ft. now). Tom Compton is so busy trying to turn Drag Racing into some money making NASCAR "esque" circus that he has forgotten how cool it used to be. The investment put into making these Cackle Fest cars is huge! The fan response is over whelming! That right there tells me people want to see these cars run!

There's a place in drag racing for 330 mph cookie cutter spacecraft. But, there should also be a place to race heads up with a back yard build dragster. What needs to happen is another sanctioning body come along. The NHRA is big business they force the sportsman racers to fund the fuel guys. They get a ton of sportsman cars (400 plus) and maybe 40 fuel cars at an event. The IHRA is a show. The last AHRA was a disaster. The ADRL is big bucks pro mod stuff. How about a place where 2 or 3 guys can build a car and run heads up with other guys. I know this all gets out of hand and someone starts to speed big bucks and then it gets out of hand. There is still a place for cars like this.

so calling this a cackle car would be more appropriate than digger? still not sure how they got there name digger, i could guess you know maybe .. because that car will dig your grave? i see they have blankets that goes over the rear ends.. im guessing they are used in these too..

still be afraid of the rear going with my jewels sitting near by.

I understand the term 'digger' came from "Digging Out" in a short run. "Has your car got much DIG" and similar. As for the steel strap over the ring gear, it's to keep it from sawing out and teaching you to speak Soprano!
I'll have to post a picture or two of the 8-3/4" rear in my car. Soon as I sort how.

OK, So we clean up all our **** and drag the ch***is table back out into the proper location! I still needed to finish up details with the JIG. The front axle JIG needs mounting holes in the table. I want this to be used again at some point thinking I would possibly build another one of these??? Who knows...

So I maxed it out for 150” WB And then mounted the front axle Fixture:

The Rear-End Fixture was only partially complete so I finished welding all the pieces together on this unit. It holds the Rear at the center of my M&H slick should they be full Diameter of 31” I know they will sag a bit but that’s OK as I have figured this into all my clearance as I move along with the frame rails.

Then it gets mounted in place.... Lots of X-Measuring and Double checking for alignment etc.... Drill holes and bolt it up!

Then we drill new holes for the proper WB on the original car, bolt up the Front Axle fixture and get down to business!!!

I need to make some brackets to support the Torsion tube in the right spot so I used the Orig Arm I have to help locate the tube in the proper location. Now that its in the right spot I will fab little support arms to lock it in position.

Next we just start plopping tubes down and the thing starts to take shape! I need to hoist the block back up in the ch***is either today or tomorrow before I really start hacking and welding....

And another little update.... I have been mildly reluctant to take the first block in for the full treatment at the machine shop due to the cost involved with sleeving the block. I'm not against that deal but it's another $750 on top of all the other work that needs to be done. So a good friend came across a bunch of goodies from an old TopGas racer out of San Jose and I managed to nab another '57 Block and crank. Happy to report that we've got a winner! All clean and ready to go!

I'm dialed!!! Called Steve, he called a friend, we called each other, and on Saturday I will own not 1 but 2 complete Olds Rear Ends. Got a great story tossed in about Gotelli and Bruno as well... My Day is complete.

    Thanks!

So now this is the original front axle that came from Australia somewhere, mated back up together with the original spoiler for the first time since when ?
I forget, are the spindles part of the original car as well ??
Simply unreal to see this car actually come back into existence like Jesus did Lazarus!

    Hey Tom,

Yeah this is the Orig. Front axle that has been in a Fella's back bedroom for the last 20 or so years. He has been a long time friend of the last owner of this famed car and had saved this item as a little momento after the car was dismantled. Once I picked it up and drove to Frank Fedak's shop in Garden Grove he started digging around in the Mezzanine and found that he still had the original deflector plate! Tim Beebe and John Mulligan couldn't use this plate after Tom Hanna built the full body and nose piece for the car prior to the '68 Season. Frank was just building his new car, the Beebe and Fedak AA/FD so he went ahead and bolted it onto his deal. Thankfully he kept it! Now it's right back where it belongs, bolted to this front axle...

I agree in that it's all too cool... I'm still a little shocked myself each time I walk out into the shop and look at it!

The spindles are not Orig, but they are trimmed to look exactly like they were. We are still actively looking for parts in AUS but only time will tell if we can uproot more items.

    Cheers,

    Robert M.

Here's a little project that I have been messing around with the past few evenings... I had posted earlier that I received all the original Patters for RCS front torsion parts from Ronnie Hampshire. Now, it's totally fine to just mark up some plate and cut this stuff out but I wanted to go a bit more modern... Tom Hanna needs some of these and there might be a few more folks that will need them in the future so I drew them up in the CAD system and they are now ready to head out to the Water Jet shop today to be sliced up! I printed them full size real quickly and made some Paper Dollies... They are spot on! Now we can make a **** load of them with ease!
