I like it better with the steel wheels!

  3. I don't mind it with those, keep in mind that was before I painted the V8 red so just that little touch really made a big difference in breaking everything up.

But I really like the look with the new wheels and the ride...well lets just say that's like night & day!

I like it much better with the alum wheels. If the steelies were painted something other than black they would help to set the car off better. Being black they just fade into the car and disappear.

^^^What HRP said. Amazing what something as simple as a wheel change can do to the personality of a car.

Personally I like it better with the black wheels because you see the complete car at first look and take it in as one unit and then a lot of very interesting components pop up that make that very interesting car complete.
With the aluminum wheels it looks too much like a magazine wheel add with the black roadster picked as a background. You see the wheels, then the windshield frame and oh yes, by gum there is a very nice roadster in the background. They just don't present the same well packaged look that the black wheels do on that car.

  8. I hear ya...that's why I say painting the caps really helped break all that black up:

The mags take it to a whole 'nother level --- Looks great!!

I'm sure Don would be thrilled with the way his old car has turned out.

  10. Very well worded and can't argue with that logic one bit...

  11. Thanks so much for that, a couple of his friends walked up to it at a show a few weeks ago and said the same thing...and that made me happy...because I do think Don would be glad with the direction his roadster has gone.

I didn't realize that was Dons old car but thought you had built one similar,I'm happy to see you are the caretaker and taking care is excatly what you are doing,I think Don would approve. HRP

  13. Thanks...and I get that a lot. As soon as I painted it, it took on a whole new look.

It is the Don Kendall roadster and I make sure I tell everyone who asks, if you look closely I had some decals made up and put 3 of them on the car.

I originally bought this car to flip it but after 2 days of driving it, I knew that would never happen and in the end...it really has changed my life as far as car interests...I ended up selling off all my musclecars and now this is my street cruiser. When I go to shows, these cars are all I look at now whereas before, my interests were completely different.

How did you do the hood louver thing. I really like that. Are they modified 33 34 hood sides or a complete fab. I vote for the black steelies with out the painted caps although it doesn't look bad with the aluminum wheels either. just kinda street roddy I think.

  16. Sharp eye...they are '34 sides and I believe Brookville did the louvers but I could be wrong on that...all custom fabrication was done by the late master Don Kendall.

Wow, what a difference with such a simple change of wheels. Love the steelies but some pinstriping in contrast color will bring the rims out more.

I'm not sure if this is a thread for the wheels before & after, but here it goes. I was running the old wide whites (which were used when I got them) & needed new tires. I've always loved the smoothie/one piece Halibrand looks, so when the wheel was knocked off for a reasonable price, I made the change. The old ones were 6.00-16's all around & the new ones are "bigs 'n littles" (7.00-16's/5.50-16's). It handles better, better turning radius & better bite off the line. But, truth be told, I wish I could flip a switch back & forth every day. I like them both.

I am thinking about making this change, but right now it's only Photoshop . . .

  21. First off...your car has Stunning stance so any set of wheels (including wooden) would look fantastic but if you can pull off that photochop with those tires...well then you'll really have a conversation! Real nice!

    Keep 'em coming boys...

  22. Also...the flames scream Hot Rod so adding those wheels complete the package for me.

On the stock steelies, I would keep them to change up the look but I personally would lose the gold paint and paint them gloss black. That change with the chrome trim rings will make that car look tougher than it does now...trust me.

I like the look of the steelies but on the other hand I`ve always been a fan of Halibrands, they set the look on on your roadster.(JMHO)
I would be tickled pink to be driving that rod with about any wheels on it.

Totally agree. I was thinking of doing that. I have never liked the gold wheels. I only obtained this car in February, still really looking at it. These tires ride nice too, but bias ply would improve the look. To be honest I was planning to paint the wheels black the day I got it, but then I noticed the gold wheels have some nice pin striping on them, so I hesitated. (The car was striped and flamed in the 1970's by a guy named Rody Kuschnereit who is somewhat well known.) I also thought about Moon discs because this car has history on the dry lakes. With the header caps off and the cam it's got, it definitely has the sound to pull that look off.

  27. Great find...I have open exhaust too right about where yours are placed and uncorked with the lumpy cam and it sounds *****ing.

The steel wheels with the hub cap red accent "soften" the look of the entire car in a favorable way without saying "Look at me."
It gives a "low key" nostalgia look of the 50's. Adding red pin stripes to the rims would
enhance the overall look even more. Buy some red pin stripe tape and see how it looks.

like them both ****t.......... you need something like said before to break up the look of the plain wheel , if you have the ribbed beauty ring fill the ribs with paint , and you might want to do something to the ribs around the windows of the mags ... but other than that looking good .
