Brother, you have to be even more cautious when soldiering/brazing copper lines and fittings that have been in service.
Residual ref. is still a possibility, remember to nitrogen purge your lines etc...
Also when getting your medical check up, inform the lab doing any blood work that you work with ref, I believe it is the pot***ium levels that must be monitored.
Most likely anyone exposed to gases may indeed want to do same.

    Gulp. Damn...

That's scary. I don't use brake or carb cleaner when welding. But I do use anti-splatter spray when I run flux core.

Are there other chemicals that will also cause this other than what's been posted?

Thanks for reposting this, I missed it too. These type of things should be reposted from time to time. It's not like he reposted about the new rebel rodz or how to install an air bag and four link set up... On a related note, NEVER ALLOW AMONIA AND BLEACH TO COME IN CONTACT WITH EACH OTHER!!! It results in mustard gas!!

Be careful to recover freon if you're working in a low, or enclosed area instead of just cutting the lines and letting it run out (not that we would do that :)..) Burning freon also results in poison phosgene gas.

Posting this here as well incase you havn't seen the other thread.
P.T.F.E. Tape.Pretty inert stuff, right? You can swallow this stuff with no ill effect,But,when subjected to naked flame ,it gives off poisinous gas.If I remember correctly,it's CYANIDE.
When serving in the R.A.F. in the '80s we recieved a safety bulletin regarding transmission seals on I think,Ford ******s.These seals, when burning, give off a toxic gas that can be FATAL ON FIRST CONTACT.

Thanks for a good tip. I'll have to remember this when working on all the welding projects.

  25. Got a an email from a chemical engineer who mentioned this about brake fluid...

Car Brake fluid and chlorine tablet for pools: It will generate a nice flame and produce chlorine gas.

Be careful if they get stored near each other in your garage... an old bottle of brake fluid gets a leak next to a chlorine tablet sitting loose on a shelf can go WHOOSH!

Any of you pyros out there, DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME!!!

Also (Coca or any kind of) Cola and those chlorine tablets produce deadly chlorine gas when they come in contact.

    Have a nice day!

one of the first things welders learned in the Navy is about safety, so your son will know about that. I didnt know about it when I went in, and had been welding at home for years and was one of the first things we were taught. [phosgene gas is 'mustard gas' and was used during ww1 by the Germans].

    see this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haloalkane

I hear ya Duane. I was in the AF from 84-88 and we used Trichloroethene (trike) to clean the bathrooms and stuff. It was just 'cleaner' to us then...

But this is different stuff, especially when exposed to open flame and argon gas...

If it makes the gas during welding heat, it could be the same product going thru the engine, but maybe not because of the closed combustion.

I had an R-12 leak that was the high side hose that went thru the same body ducting as the engine air intake on a Detroit Diesel. The fumes were awful, But I'm still here. So maybe it isn't phosgene when going thru an engine.

How about those snifer freon leak testers? Nice blue flame turns to green.
How many of us have done that?

    Yikes! Thanks for posting!
I guess reading the label is all we can do. I saw that checking for 'Non-Clorinated" was a good idea. Is there any "safe" cleaner for welding?
