Ok, now that I am nearing completion of my 63 F100 project my mind is racing..... I mean really racing! Drag racing is cool and all, but I want to go lakes racing. I have been collecting various parts for years and I think I am forming a plan. I have commissioned a friend to build me a stout early VW transaxle with swing axles and set up to run upside down and mid-engined. I have a '40's Willys front axle, spindles and steering linkage and I think I can fab up a set of steel wheels to run some small front runners up front and the rears should be no problem. I have a drop tank from what I belive is a VietNam era aircraft, possibly a Mustang? I'm keeping an eye out for some early Hilborn injection stuff like a two port scoop, injectors, pump and ***ociated gear, possibly a drysump oil pump to modify into this mess. I will need other stuff as I go allong. I am going to plan as much as I can with my design software for ****s and giggles, nothing quite like building a very 40's style race car with the latest technology available! This will be a long term project.
The hell you say ! I have a mill and a TIG who says I can't make it fit, LOL That shelving unit is just chock full of useless ****.
Go for it I have raced with a friend at Bonnevile and had a blast ran a blown flathead. Do not let anyone change your plan. Gary TMAN you have something negative to say about ever post you see.
go for it Steve, I look forward to what you come up with... wow you're bright... but then I guess you can't spot playful banter between friends... what an ***hat
Got any suggestions, I have seen this style tank used under a few. I fact there is a P-51 locally that I have seen carry this same style tank. And because this is a pinch weded tank not a riveted tank tells me it is from a later era AND it is much smaller than the P-38 tank by about a third. It is only 24" in diameter at its girth and is only 10' long. Not being an aviation buff, I am sure to make a few guffaws But thanks anyway, what was BobK's tag line?
so just what do you plan on doing with a banger, gonna give it to me as a sacrifice to the gods of speed?
No plans yet, want to yank it outta the frame and inspect it in the worst way! I am having evil thoughts about this late model banger crank that is sitting here.........any idea what the bore centers are?
I'm a noob to bangers. Got a couple of books I need to read and some catalogs from various banger guys. I really need to spend some time with the other banger guys posts here on the board, some smart guys. I need to twist Metalshapes arm really hard to get the "special" parts from his home town, they are necessary to this builds B part of the description. If you catch my drift... hint hint, nudge nudge. Tyler, you can always be the towel boy! Of course you can join the pit crew and stand around looking cool and purposefull like the rest of us. Next week I will spend some time drawing up the parts I do have like the axle, spindles, block and such. I intend on tinkering with this for some time.
I see TWO bangers on teh shelf there Steve! Your tank looks F86 Sabre to me. And I took the time to search my posts, MrF100 really got to me and I was worried I was carrying too much negativity http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/search.php?searchid=3637475 At least the first 25 were pretty positive......wheW! i was worried there for a sec.........
Gotcha, the F86 was the other one we thought it could be when I got it 8 years ago. I just couldn't remember, kept coming up with F-85 in my head and I knew that wasn't right. LOL I do have two sitting there in pretty damn good shape. I have a third still in a ch***is that is siezed up but saveable. I am sure there is going to be a learing curve like Bobby Green is going through with his.
Sounds like I'll have to get serious about getting them sent here... Cool project Steve. Nice to see you get started on it...
Learning curve? We finished Bob's tank over two years ago. Raced El Mirage for a season and raced Bonneville last August and set a record. Its not a learning curve at all, everyday you race and don't race is learning... Lucky
Steve, regarding the wheels, I'm building a set right now using VW Bug rims on later Ford 5X4 1/2 inners. Makes for a nice 4" wide 15 incher. Wayno
I thought I would post once again this picture of my not to traditional but very cheap substute for Hilborn throttle bodies. With sealed ball bearings on the throttle shafts. Easy to do it yourself pr I gould help out. Also some 18 X 6 wheels with a 5 on 4.5 bolt circle I'm trying to unload. With wheel covers who would know?
Richfox, I'm interested. Tell me more about the throttle body subs***utes ya got going on there. Hell, tell me all about that motor. That's a Plymouth, right?? Mike
Pictured are 4.6 Ford SOHC throttle bodys which are about 2 9/16 dia. 65mm. and go for $15 or $20 each. The rest of the manifold I made out of s**** metal that was around. There are larger and smaller throttle bodies available on ebay. Last time I looked there were about 1500 listings. I have used Suzuki motorcycle throttle bodies and two bbl. Ford F150 parts. There all kinds. Then I used Hilborn nozzles metering block and pump. I used Holly jets for the byp***. The motor is a '32 Plymouth and I have pictured it here so many times most must be tired of seeing it.
Awsome guys! Getting lots of help. Elmo, that is almost exactly what I had in mind for the wheels. Yeah VW trans axle. Like I said I have one of the West Coast's best trans axle builders literally across the c**** from my shop at Arizona Transaxle. The main reason for doing a trans axle in this case is convienence and familiarity. I can shove the engien back closer to the drive wheels putting more weight on them, better traction. AND the enclosed swing axle tubes make the supsension very simple and compact. Bill at ATE quizzed me about this at length last year when I started collection engine parts about power output. He is used to building 300 HP drag bug transaxles and figured this would actually be easy to do. AND if I do need to upgrade in the future the base Mendeola trans is a dead bolt in. I know this is small. I want it to have as small an envelope as possible. That is also the reason why I want to build this on my solid modeling program first so I can package it as tightly as possible. I have not ruled out modifying this tank for length or girth.
Damn Steve I can't believe it has been 8 yrs since you have had that thing! Can't wait to see the progress ,Mike
