out shooting pic's today came across this belly tank is it worth saving?I can get it down it has some rust but looks to be perfect size and easily fixed. give me your thoughts. P.S. it looks to be the same as the so. cal. car.
I know that this may sound insane........but, NO.........unless you can get it for the "cheap" side of nothing........and heck I am a "tank" chaser. Chris
why is it up their? bird house? I thought they where aluminum why is it rusty? I dont know why I ***umed that.
those aren't bullet holes, them are speed holes!! by the looks of the number, oughta be worth at least 17mph on the short course
I was surprised to find out that there were steels drop tanks but even more surprised when I found out that they also made drop tanks from paper mache!!!seems they had a sealer that would let them hold fuel for a few hours and since they were intended for 1 use it was a perfect low cost means of building them
not tring to scoop your haul just odd something like that goes unseen till now and in so cal . i have my big project to work on anyway i know of a few drops i could get . but thats for later. billy
it looks like some one was useing it as a water tower so it may just be held together buy paint but if its free always go for it
GTFO! What the **** is that, some kinda' Kaliforni Burd House? Geez, too bad they don't have 'em around here...................
Take more pictures when you go get it. I think you gotta slice it lengthwise to make it into a race car, so you could weld patches on the inside for the bullet holes. You could leave the outsides like they are and name it something bullet related. Bullet Train? Thanks, Kurt
Many of the drop tanks for WWII aircraft were made by The Mullins Company the same outfit that made the Mullins Red Cap Utility trailer.
Fwiw, the paper mache tanks were developed by aircraft ground crews in Europe. Idea was to prevent the Germans from salvaging the aluminum to use in their war effort. As noted, they had to be fueled right before the mission cuz they were only good for 6-8 hours from what I understand. Funny part was, the European based ground crew officers suggested to US based officers that paper mache tanks would help deprive the enemy of aluminum. Their answer? "It won't work." The reply? We've been doing it for several months and it works fine." Musta been a bunch of hot rodders on the ground crews....
That tank is to small for a race car... Its only 13ft long. and its steel....It has a billion holes...Do the math its not worth saving at all....Looks good right where it is.....Lucky
