Anyone know what belly tanks go for these days or even where to find one? And no I'm not talking about the ones already made into rods. I'm talking about your typical plane fuel tank with nothing done to it since that day it was made. Thnaks
Doubtless real WWII "surplus" models are big money these days, but I'm fairly certain someone makes them in fibreglass. Try www.roadsters.com and look in the fibreglass body section.
Ok thanks a lot I'll check there. Don't suppose if anyone knows if these fabled "Airplane Grave Yards" do exist and would actually sell their stuff because I have a hankering to build a late 40's car and want to put some plane parts in it.
a place called class glass in cumberland maryland makes them.. I think they are around 1100 bux.. not that I have priced them or anything
LDC437, There is a guy in the Phoenix, AZ area that has three drop tanks forsale. I think he wants around $450 for each of them. My Computer crashed and it is in my Email's that I need to recover. Give me a few days and I can get you his info if you want it. PM' me and let me know if you want me to send it to you. Chris Nelson Kansas
There's one on eBay right now. $500 and it's in southern Maine. Go to "eBay Search" and type "belly tank".
This one's a Rod n' Race fiberglass piece. http://www.rodnrace.com/rnr/p-38.htm Belly tanks were a LOT more available right after WWII when a lot of planes were decommissioned. They still show up on eBay now and then. Modern planes also have similar tanks, but look less traditional, and are often made of kevlar. Fiberglass is what you can buy new. Take your pick. --Matt
Sodbuster, make sure you post that guy's name (the Phoenix guy) if you find it, that way I'll know, just in case.
D, PM me to remind me. That way I can PM it back to you. Too many lurkers out there to beat you to the punch. Chris Nelson Kansas
I took a picture of this at B'Ville this year. The # is (352) 538-3435 I think the two tourists are impressed. TZ
Deuce Rails, that isn't actually a Rod & Race body. That is the Kelly & Hall Lakester that I crew on. Jack Kelly did the tooling and later sold that tooling to Rod & Race. By the way, the P-38 Tank I bought yesterday is a real aluminum one. 60 years of rolling around has made it look like a large streamlined aluminum walnut. It's not bad, though and will straighten out nicely. Wayno
Here are a few Jesse James and I saw in Mexico. He bought two of them and I didn't. Then again, I didn't have that fat wad to peel a few bills offa. Know what I mean? I could tell you where the stash is, though...
Yeah stoner if you could tell me where those are that would be great, how much did Jesse pay for them so that i have a general idea.

Hey flatblack, I think those are two tourists waiting for the hotdog stand to open! That makes me think you might be able to convert an Oscar Meyer Wienermobile into a belly (or is it wiener-) tanker!. Maybe you want to leave off the bun part for better aerodynamics...
Hey now thats a good idea think of how many engines you could cram into that giant hot dog body -weiner mobiles are really big you know- now if I could only berak into the Oscar-Meyer compound....
I was at a military surplus yard over the summer looking for cool seats for my cdan but found none. This fellow had an amazing collection of stuff that may include a belly tank. The goods were spread out over a large area & he is not keen on random wanderings. I suspect that he has felt the five finger discount in the past ... because he seemed like a nice guy. Maybe give him a quick call 1.204.274.2646 Al McMaster. He is located just west of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Later, papa al
