The plan as of now is to be ready for Bonneville in 2010, it's a long trip and I want to be ready.

Wasn't sure about trying it out at Maxton, how smooth is the coarse for a car with no rear suspension?

For my steering box, I couldn't find anything that suited as-is so I designed a new housing and steering arm around early vw beetle inernals. So I have brand new internals with the ratio I wanted in a housing that was built into the front spring mount.

swdobbs - Do you plan on going racing? Is that an original tank? Looks good!

Zach - no fairing yet still in planning

For the cad design it is all from scratch, the results of quite of few hours behind the computer and measuring alot of old rusty parts. Started with measuring the tank to draw the profile and then just kept moving things around until the look suited and everything fit. Worked great for designing the cage, very little waste while bending tubes. Both my brother and I are mechanical engineers that design expensive machines all day long, designing an drawing this stuff is a pleasure.

Looking good. I see your following the Old Crow blueprints. It totally takes me back to my build a few years ago. Even our garages look similar. LOL
Keep up the good work, We need more tanks on the salt.

pardon my ignorance, is it common plazce to have a solid mounted rear end in a belly tank?

Solid mounted rear ends are not unusual on shorter tanks.
Not enough length for a driveshaft.

Here are couple of new pics. Slow progress but gathered some more pieces of the Hilborn, working on getting the main water tank fit in place. The water tank started as a aluminum 33 lb. propane tank. It still needs some mounting brackets made up but all signs say it will fit inside the shell.

    wow thats a cool build

  18. The tank is looking good. What is the capacity of that water tank? I have been told you should have around 25 gal to cool a flat motor for a run. I would like to hear other opinions on this.

Good looking build. A lot of us will be riding along with you on this one. My tank went down the road. Squigy has it now. To many projects and not enough years left. Reality sucks.

is the front hoop of your cage continuous?

as for the coolant tank capacity our roadster had 10 gallon tank and it kept a number of hemis on big loads of nitro (90% or more) cool at bonneville with no problems. 25 gallons sounds a bit overkill for a low output flatty but having more cooling than necessary isn't a bad thing. plus it makes for good ballast.

Great build. Looks like you are on the right track. I finished my tank for speedweek 2008. It takes a lot of planning to get 10 pounds in a 5 pound box. It appears we have used the same type of tank. I also did a CAD design and it helped immensely with the planning and build.

good luck and go fast, libertygarage

The tank itself will hold about 9 1/2 to 10 gallons, hopefully this will be enough. I may have enough room for two saddle tanks on each side of the oil pan but I may need this space for other things.

My front cage hoop is one half hoop above the frame and one half below the frame, not one continuous hoop.

Libertygarage, I saw your tank at Bonneville, it looked great. What was the top speed you ran? Did you stretch your tank?

Should be more than enough for a 3 mile run.

I meant continuous above the main frame rail. It was hard to tell whether or not your front hoop was one piece or multi-piece in your pics. I'm a SCTA tech inspector so I these types of things pop into my mind.

    Good looking build.

  27. Very nice! In the next few years this is one thing I 'must' do.
