E-Z Coil is a weigh cool device, I ended up using as a last resort. My Ford 302 engine was running 220* after 10 minutes of idling. Replaced the upper and lower radiator hoses and the 180*T-stat.. No change. Checked timing. Perfect at 9* BTDC. The by-p*** hose and heater by-p*** hose were slightly kinked and pressed up against each other causing narrowing of the inside diameter. Cut a section out of a Napa 1991-94 Nissan Sentra hose with many bends for the lower hose. The upper hose I used a Goodyear E-Z Coil (5/8") for the necessary bend. And, the 5/8" straight hose did not kink like it had been doing. The engine now idles at 190*. Love it! The guy at the Parts Store told me some custom build shops keep plenty of these in various diameters in stock so they don't have to go chase custom hoses down. As you can see, I made a 90* bend without the supple new Goodyear 5/8" hose collapsing/kink-ing. Simply bend it to fit.
O-rilley had some a bit ago, even sell um in radiator hose size. They do work, just a dandy when you need it!. buy a few different sizes if they got um, Handly In fact im needing one for my lower hose!
It would help if you had them routed correctly. The top WP outlet is for the byp***. They sell that lil elbow.
Odd that should make your motor overheat. I capped both heater outlets on my 76 sbf and my complaint is running too cold enen with the 180 stat
Thanks Shinysideup, I bought this 302 with AOD off Craigs L. Went by the way it was setup. What you stated makes sense. Although what if this 84 has a reverse rotation waterpump? Does that change anything?
Summit has it - http://www.summitracing.com/search/.../Product-Line/Goodyear-Heater-Hose-E-Z-Coils/ Amazon too - http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias=automotive&field-keywords=Goodyear+E-Z+Coil+
A parts department person at a Ford Dealership ran the EOSE number on the T-stat housing and said T-stat is from a '84 T-Bird. Did the '84 T-Bird have a serpentine belt? If so, did the previous owner convert it to vee belts, or did this 302 come with vee belts from the factory in '84? Block # is EOAE. Thanks for posting the pic of the by-p*** hose. It appears to be 3/4" on one end and 5/8" on the other, which confirms the correct routing of the by-p*** hose you mentioned. I appreciate your knowledge on this. I've mainly been a sbc guy til now.
V-belts and standard rotation through '85 on 302s IIRC. '86-up was serpentine and reverse-rotation on most of the 302s, though Ford had a bunch of different accessory-drive setups on that engine through the '80s and into the '90s.
JEM, There are four 1984 Mustangs with 302's on ebay that show pictures of the engines with a serpentine belt. Also, there is a 83 Mustg GLX 302 and a 83 Mercury Cougar with a 302, and both have a serpentine belt. Went to Orilleyparts.com and their software indicates a '84 Thunderbird 5.0/302 uses a serpentine belt. Showed pictures of the belt with price. Hmmmm
In a pinch, regular springs work great to prevent kinks, just grab a spring slightly larger than the OD of your hose and slide the spring to the kink location and viola! Kink resolved. Depending on the "strength" of the kink, a zip tie on the spring, would keep the spring from spreading out. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
The stock lenght by-p*** hose needs to be trimmed to lenght before installation. That will eliminate the kinking.
Shinysideup- Changed routing of the heater byp*** hose and std byp*** hose. Sure was easier to do with the replacement byp*** hose. The coolant temperature didn't change tho. Still used the EZ Coil on the heater core byp*** hose. Evidently the previous owner put radiator Stop Leak in it, because after three or so radiator draining episodes, the radiator sprang a leak. Rather than reseal it, I ordered a '32 Highboy All Aluminum Champion three row radiator on eBay.
I ran a OEM hose spring off something (don't remember what) in my lower radiator hose to keep it from kinking................but I put it on the inside for esthetics.
Here ya go, proper hose routing and length does help, agreed, but here's a pic of proper hose routing/length (stock overflow tank on a 73 power wagon) and it still would've kinked without this spring in place (overflow tank needs replaced) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Looping the heater hoses is allowing too much coolant to byp*** the radiator. Maybe this is why you are running too hot. Just use pipe plugs instead of looping that hose. Much cleaner install too.
Hose routing looks good now. Sounds like you're on the right track, that rad is plugged up. Let us know how she does after install.
I did one a little trickier had a fuel line that kept kinking ,I installed springs inside the hose...............5 bucks at home depot,
My 79 mustang has a serpentine and reverse rotation. If your engine came with reverse and someone put on belts, now the water pump is turning the Wrong Way. Hence overheating. I can't recall a sure way to check. I know the ports on the timing cover are different.
