Has anyone used one of these in their car? Its an adapter that will mate a y-block to AOD. I've already got the adapter from Mummert to adapt a C4, but think I may want to go with an overdrive as I want to use it on longer trips when I get it done.
I can't see why the same adapter would not work for the AOD the bolt pattern is the same as a C4,what the problem would be is in the flexplate as the AOD used a 50oz balance factor and C4's were 28oz.www.transmissioncenter.net has a complete Y-block to AOD kit with a good picture of the parts on their website, click on the AOD section, you may want to give their tech people a call they are usually very helpful. For a great deal on an AOD converter google Roadrunner Converters here in Phoenix, they are one of the oldest around.
Is the bellhousing on an AOD removable like the C4. I thought they were one peice with the case. That was the only reason I was thinking about the other adapter. The adapter I have for the C4 is the whole bellhousing.
Chalupa55, You are correct. The AOD does not have a removable bell like the C-4. The Flat-o adaptor kit that you have only works on the C-4. Although I have not used the Bendtsen adapter I have heard pros and cons on it, mostly fit. I have a C-4 in my Ranchwagon and am very happy with it. Running 3.55's in the rear. But then I came across this Bad Dog that a friend had and offered it to me for a price I couldn't p*** up; So I am in the process of installing it (if and when I finish my Honey Do list, haha). If I use it as a gear splitter it will give me a Six Speeds.
There is a pic on the website I refered you to,the AOD uses a plate adapter so will it work since it bolts to the bellhousing? That's why you should call the tech line, you might get lucky.
Jeff, The pic on the website you refered him to is The Bendtsen Adapter, the same trans adapter that Chalupa55 is asking about. The Bendtsen adapter will adapt a C-4, C-6 AOD, etc. If he decides to go the Bendtsen route, he can use any of the mentioned Transmissions. He doesn't need the adapter he has now to adapt the C-4, he can use the stock C-4 bell. http://www.transmissionadapters.com/ford_y_block.htm The one he has now, the Flat-o C-4 adapter is different. Can only be used for a C-4... Hope that clears things up?
Thanks for the input guys, Yea $850 plus trans, is a bit steep. Y-blockhead, I will be running the stock gearing 3.54's , which is damn close to your 3.55's. If you are happy with it I'm sure I will be. I'm not planning on drag racing (maybe a few times at the local track), but mostly just cruising. I bought my C4 from my brother-in-law already built with a manual valve body I think it might be quite a bit to agressive, so I may use another I have and just rebuild it with a nice little shift kit. Man how priorities change when you get older, when your young you just want loud fast and who cares. Now I want it to be smoother with nice pipes but not to loud, and no creeks or moans.
Part of the reason a lot of us put a 5.0 and AOD in our Fords, you can get both for what he wants for an adapter kit or less.Something is wrong with that picture!
I agree, that is alot of money for what you get. Personally I don't like the way the sbf looks in these cars, thats just my personal opinion. Don't get me wrong they are awesome engines/trannies, I've got a few I just like the way the y-block looks in there, plus I've always had good luck with them. I will be putting a 5.0/T-5 combo in a buddy of mines 54' Customline this summer. I paid $500+ for my Flat-0 adapter and I thought that was alot, but to me it is worth it.
