Hot Rods BENNETTS ‘Pacific-Indian Special’ ‘29 Roadster on ‘32 rails

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by jordabennett, Jun 5, 2022.

  1. Well I’ve been back again in Canada visiting home and family. It’s been a great trip so far with some exciting things happening and found, one that’s taking the spot light happens to be this clean ‘29 roadster. Definitely my dream car to build on an original ‘32 frame and keep it a high boy with a heavy chop on the original bows!
I’ll keep it short and sweet and explain more of the story and the build process continues. But through some parts and another RPU I had, Kelly (owner) and I were able to make a deal.
Dad and I drove up dropped off the RPU and picked up the roadster, frame and other bits I was able to score.
This will travel across the pond to Western Australia where I will build it and drive the wheels off it. I’ve been collecting parts again for years for this and finally I have the main ingredients to get it all happening.
It will house a 32 truck grill, heavy axle, 40 spindles and brakes, a nice 59a with some goodies, 39 trans, 36 rear end with an original QC 40 ford wheels, Lyons white wall rings and tires to suit. (6.00 fronts 6.50 rear at the moment but I may change to 7.50s I have some special pieces for this.
Here are some photos so far:
I’m still up in the air weather I will louver the trunk lid and hood…

That would be right at home in a Rod & Custom feature article back in 1972. Great find!

Awesome, saw the video mate. Should be a great addition to the WA scene where there are lots of street rods and less hotrods :)

  7. Just collecting parts slowly, it’s now packed away in the container and will continue this week to get some items I need for it inside.
Scored a really nice 59ab with a boat lord of NOS parts which will help getting this beating heart between the rails. I found some Kaiser tail lights and matching shift/ handbrake accessory handle too. As well as some BLC buckets with a great patina. A dash (if anyone can identify?) maybe Plymouth? and really nice gauge cluster with tulip gauges.

    big thanks to
Dave, Craig and Matt for passing these great parts along the line! Much appreciated fellas FF570D8E-7511-4109-8EA2-567CECF8E76E.jpeg 0828C3D4-69A8-4DB3-BE0C-30225B928494.jpeg 5EDCCF8C-F498-482F-B2B1-21F9E0C1FFAA.jpeg 1FDE0437-F4E8-46A1-A97E-F8A1C895A9FB.jpeg A30E0A39-71CD-41EC-9AF1-01464765ED0E.jpeg 48377D23-5B57-4470-927F-009F0A80EB9D.jpeg 25DADE63-42A3-4E7A-90D6-B8EA25783F2C.jpeg

Cool looking project. I had just happened to be thumbing through a 1960 Hot Rod magazine a couple days ago and this little 29 caught my eye. Not sure what time frame you’re shooting for, but I really like the looks of this one. Ironically, it was a Canadian built car. Well, I guess if I’d been paying attention when I read the original post, I would’ve seen that you were going for a highboy style. Lol. Sorry to invade your post and I’ll delete my pics if you’d like. Consequently, there was another feature in that same mag of a 29 closer to your intent, with the exception of having cycle style fenders also.

  13. Well after finishing the single seater race car (for now) I’ve started a mild mock up with the roadster and parts. It’s finally travelled from across the pond and will start to get into it over Christmas.
We just had a 2 week old new born so he’s been taking up the majority of my free time. But exciting enough I friend gifted a pedal car that oddly similar, so now we both have a fun project. Here are a couple shots thus far. 3442A258-39F4-4D2E-B17A-079104133D7A.jpeg 8F54AD37-CB2C-4D28-93FF-137BF3EB8EAD.jpeg 0593673F-8A35-44E0-9BCC-5B4C5F4B1FEB.jpeg 98F409F9-3900-4DBA-A76F-64E8D3454B1A.jpeg 3F12168C-D1D2-4BA1-A743-28951E7879E6.jpeg

  14. Has anyone made an overdrive unit from a model a trans? I’ve seen one modified and flipped backwards, but I would love to run something off the back of the 39 ford 3 speed

  20. A load to the blasters, I plan to plan the inside the k member of the frame but the putter rails I’ll leave. Everything else will be painted black. AE6198AA-8A7B-453E-8913-B7945788508B.jpeg DA1FCADD-E4C7-4B0C-A58C-1986A19B712E.jpeg

  21. Great story and pics. Am i the only one who notices the differences between a American car trailer, a Aussie car trailer and a Euro car trailer. Not in the pics but here it,s common for the trailer wheels to be small and under the trailer floor. Load floors are just as big but axle track is under the floor, not outboard.

Its a small world Jordan. That axle you bought off Boris came out of a truck I pulled apart probably around 15 years ago. :) Guess he is never building that 32 lol.

  25. Yes that certainly didn’t make any sense,
I meant to say the frame internals and inside of the frame will be sand blasted but the outter will be left to match the body (for now)

  26. Haha yes I spoke to Borris about it, it looks very much like model aa I don’t think it ended up being heavy 32 but that’s okay!

As you can see we blasted everything but the outside of the rails to keep the original patina match the body, I have a few areas that need to be addressed and will figure out what to do for rear crossmember (curved) to fit the ‘36 spring

  29. Spending a bit of time over the Chrissy break to start working on fixing the frame issues. Started to make the front spreader bar too from a model A brake crossover

  30. Got the flanges mounted crossmember finished and installed (for now) and put the grill on loosely to see what it looked like. Now it’s time to get the frame on the table the squared up.
Few examples as to why I left the arm.
