I'd give a TKO 600 a second look, will handle the torque and can be had with a center shifter location for more comfort.

  2. We have thought about that one too, just waiting to see how the budget pans out.

IMHO, if budget is an issue, then the A-833 is your best choice. If you need an example of how much abuse they can handle check out some of the nostalgia SS races.
Unless I am mistaken, the TKO type units are $$$$$.

  4. I'm looking at those on Brewers Performance. What ratio would be best? http://brewersperformance.com/products.asp?cat=87

Ratios are a personal choice IMO.
I'd suggest looking around and see if you can find one at a swap meet or in craigslist as a starting point. Once you have the adapter, flywheel and bellhousing then swapping to another A833 is a simple task so if you like the ratios in the first trans you can keep it or, if needed, buy a new one.

  6. Alright. Also, 18 or 23 spline? The 18 is stronger, and I don't know much about 354's, but I wouldn't expect to see torque over 500 ft lbs. Will the 23 spline be alright?

The 23 spline was standard on all B-RB cars except for the 440-6 and 426H. I think you'll be OK....

  8. Alright, looks like the A833 is the best choice so far. Dad likes to save money anywhere he can so that may be the one we get.
