Looking into what I want for my 51 Merc...thinking somewhere just a tad more than the mild, but NOT wild. Im figuring around 4.5 or 5 inch front, unsure of back. Really super interested in

    A. quarter window shape

    B. how it flows into the decklid.

Im figuring straight pillars, and Im going to use a 49 back window (early 49 style)

As far as quarter window goes, yeah I know about stock length and all, but what Im wondering is the shape of the rear area of the windows. Seems some people make cuts at the base of the window, and some about 1.5" up from the base so the upward curve remains. Both look trick, just cant decide how to do it!

Heres one to start it off. This is what I mean with the quarter window, how the curve starts @ the base of the window. Think I like it but not sure?

One of my old cars...Really liked the cut at the front. Figured it around 5" ish.

Kinda leaning toward this basic chop again, but different catwalk.

  4. i made the belt line verticle and made the line go all the way around the back window. i never cared for the "melted together" look around the back glass.

i like to do them where when you look at the car you try to figure out WHERE was it cut? my personal taste though, i like slanted b pillars just because the 1/4's start looking to small with the strait post and i fab new radius's. the stock radius's tend to look to large for a chopped roof, this one is 5"

  6. I'm Biased, I don't think a 49-50 can flow like a 51, those extended quarters allow a roof to flow

Yea, that green Merc they're cuttin' up looks really good and flows well. The chop just has a very smooth and sultry flow to it.

Also, Check out the Mejia Merc. That chop is well done and is very well done proportions. ...Better yet, just hit up Rikster's page and spend all morning studying design and technique.

Janne's Merc is going to be insane. Is it going to be green just out of curiosity? What motor/trans in it? Awesomely cool...and I see that steering wheel!

I think that and Bad Bobs are hands down my favorite. I like the other style quarter window I think I am coming to realize. Not the style I first posted, but the others, that were posted here. It just flows better and doesnt have a curve out of nowhere.

    Thanx guys!

Look back through your Rodder's Journals for an article on a bare metal '51 Mercury. Nicest proportions I've seen.
