    Hi,
I'm new to this, but I've had a go at chopping the roof on my 4-Door '50 Merc; the chop was 3.34in (85mm) in vertical direction; mocked up the doors just to see what it will look like. It's not mild nor wild.....
On the same subject; anyone know where I can get new windscreen rubbers (Fr and Rear)?
    I appreciate any assistance!

I fully agree with you. I guess it comes down to personal preference.

Here are to more excellent examples of perfect chops. They didnt have the rear window moved up high like so many in this thread. Also didnt have a piece of flat sheet metal put from bottom of the rear window to the deck lid. These two mercury's are perfect on every way.

Exactly! The break line between the roof & the deck needs to be there, not a continous slope.

Lordz of Kustomz, you have my respect. I couldn't bring myself to coming off with enough cash to get yours, so I settled for the flamed 49 I got.

The black primer is one I almost bought here in SC.

The only thing is the black one above is chopped more than I've seen any, and it's almost to much because of the body is so wide.
    Just my opinion though.

(I still wanted it very bad, guy just traded it to someone else)

I don't have any pictures to add nor do I know anything about chopping a Merc, but after seeing all these photos; Anyone want to trade their Merc for 2 kids, 1 wife, 2 dogs, and two cats? I might be able to sweet'en the deal with a car or two for the right Merc! Damn, I love those sleds!

  17. Sorry to say there is no perfect chop that will look good to every one pierod. Every one has there personal likes and dislikes. chop amount, window posts, type of rear window and placment, vent windows, stainless etc. As a builder i try to please the owners likes and only the owner. Here are examples of 2 nice mercs but with different styles of chops

Post 98 shows what I have thought for years staring at pictures. There is no way Wolf Christenson's (sp?) back window is not modified. Either it's somehow a cut down window or the window is sunken in somehow, and the trim looks to be swept up in both bottom corners of the rear window. Look at Lucero's Merc in the background and compare the shape of the windows...the Lucero Merc is one of the best examples of the 51 back window in a chop but the former is way flatter, no way those are the same back window. And...bump for more pics maybe? ;)

It has always looked like it was trimmed to me also Chris, not much but just enough to help out with the roof. I planned on doing it on mine when I cut it. There is a profile pic of the rear of a 51 in a thread that bob did at a pomona show and his glass really flowed well. The glass was a repop and the glass was flat from top to bottom.

  23. My 51'
Probably more radical than most. Roof is removable and completly hand formed from 16g steel.

Some pics I took of Joe Figs sweet merc at Santa Maria. I guess slddnmatt put the "incorrect" back window in my chopped 51. You'd think he and Terry Hegman would know better :)

  28. Well the "Correct" glass im talkin about has NOTHING to do with the year of the window.:):):) Looks like someone needs to do a little more homework on Mercury's.:):):) Joe's merc has always had a 51 window in it. :)
