Best Deal You Ever Got on A Car or Truck!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 48 Poncho, Mar 14, 2006.

  1. Heard about a 64 Corvette coupe in '79 for sale, not running for 3 grand.Had a bad alternator and the guy drove the battery flat. Bought it for $1600.Dropped in a battery and drove it home.

    Christmas of 88, a friend offered me a wrecked(front end)74 Jaguar XKE conv. V12 4spd a/c and factory hardtop(!)for $1000...he needed some Christmas money....
The next summer, a Swedish guy buying bike parts from a shop down the street stopped by and asked about it. I told him six grand, he countered in broken English "four and half, four-tousand five!" yeah, I sold it.

Then there was the deuce 3 window I bought for $7500 in 1990. Unchopped ,solid as a rock, juice brakes, Pinto engine, auto trans........ if I'd just kept that one.........

In 1974 I bought this for 250.00 and had to put a trans in it, drove for 2 yrs and traded it to a friend of my brother for a 64 impala,64 buick and 2 vw's (1 conv 1reg bug).
Two weeks later he totaled the charger.
I kick myself in the ass every time I see the prices they are selling for now!

Mine(well actually my dad's) was for parts. One day about 12 years ago, he was watering the lawn. An old drunk comes by and says that he has a junk car and if my dad was interested in the motor and tranmission. Long story short my dad bought the motor, transmission, and rear end for $300. The motor was a 1970 429 cobra jet with the 4 speed top loader, and a nodular iron 9 inch ford out of a 70 torino. Motor and differential are in my 55 f-100 and the 4 speed in gonna go in my 57 f-100 behind a 390.

Late 80's in Carmen, Manitoba, I went to a farm auction, waited around all day until they finally got to the row of old cars. First item I bought was a Model A truck box for $10.... then a '28 sports coupe body for $5.00.... then a '28 tudor body on a frame with 3 fenders for $1.00... and then a '28 tudor body with one door for $0.50.

    Other deals at other times.... '33 3w for $450.... '32 3W for $1000..... '32 5w for $1600.... '34 pickup for $150

!992 Got out of the Army and needed wheels for college. My buddy had a 1981 Celica GT 5-speed. Traded it to me for a six-pack (well, really a 5-pack cause I drank one). Fusible link was fried and it needed new taillight lenses. Had it for 3.5 years, god knows how many miles, put probably less than $500 on parts tires etc. Put it on the lawn for $250. Kid came by and wanted it but he could only scrape up $175. Figured the Karma Fairies would haunt me if I didn't let him have it. Kinda miss that piece of Jap Crap.

  11. When I lived In Austin back in '92, I bought a mint 27k mile '70 Karmann Ghia convertible from an older neighbor lady, the original owner, for $2200. Didn't need a thing. Drove it for a couple of years and sold it to a guy in Germany for almost 4x.

Top ones I got for free
    2003: 1979 Bobcat 32k original

  15. In 1996 I bought a 1954 Porsche Speedster (serial #80067) for $3,500 sight unseen out of New York.

My wife and I drove out there... saw the sights and picked it up out of a garage where it had sat on jack stands for 25 years.

Put it on a rented U-Haul trailer and hauled it back to Wisconsin where I got it running just by adding a battery, tune-up and cleaning out the gas tank.

I was offered a huge amount of cash and sold it.

Took the money and my wife on a long vacation to Central America and the Caribean and when we returned we almost had enough money to pay cash for a house...!

Best deal was a 1953 Triumph Mayflower tudor my friend had. I had told him I like the way the car looked and he gave it to me. It is now yard art and the car is perfect.

This past spring (2005) I was at an auction with nothing but old cars, so you'd think the people who showed up would want to buy stuff. Not so. I bought (among others) a '40 Ford truck cab and doors for $5, and my most expensive purchase of the day was a '28 A Tudor sedan on a frame with nice doors and junk fenders for $170. Same auction, Cliffy bought a '47 Chevy woody wagon for $300. This was about 9 months ago.

Around the same time, I bought this '68 Avenger GT kit car, based on a VW pan, from another auction, for $300. Brought it home, did absolutely nothing to it but put it up for sale, within a week I had $3000 in cash in my hand. A great deal, but that car was pretty bad-ass looking. I wish I could have kept it. The $ was nice, though.

This past fall (October I think, '05 still) I bought this '57 Chevy with a clear title for $300. Took me the better part of a day to make it run and drive. It's someone's high school hotrod, it had orange fur pinned on the door panels over the original panels, and a pair of 71 Dodge Challenger bucket seats in it. The buckets sold on eBay for about $360, so I'm ahead on the car. The Fenton Hawks from the Avenger I saved and swapped them onto the '57

The best deal I've ever gotten on an old car is my old '69 C-10. I paid $1600 for it about 3 or 4 years ago, and that's not a screaming deal by any means, but this was the first old car I've ever had that was reliable enough to put any real miles on it. I was about ready to give up on old cars until I got this truck, it gave me a whole new perspective on old cars, and that was worth the price right there. Still made some $ on it, too.

Circa '87 or '88 I was out delivering pizzas when I come around a corner and see a 70 Chevelle in a yard. I stop and take a look at it and it's rust free with a V8 and auto and the only damage I can see on it is what looks like a cut about 10 inches long up the quarter panel. I go knock on the door and ask about the car, the guy tells me his aunt gave it to him but he doesn't want it. In fact he had just made the first cut on the quarter panel to start hacking it up to take to the salvage yard. I ask him what he wants for it, and he tells me if I want it I can have it, here's the keys and the title, just get it off his property. I head back to the store and have another driver drop me off and I drove it back to the house and had my girlfriend bring me back to work. Drove it for two years and then traded it for my first Harley. Three months later, the guy I swapped the Chevelle to totals it out into a culvert during a rain storm.

I guy owed me $500.00 on a carpentery job years ago, and offered me a first year Firebird, and a 1976 Hurst/OLDS. The Firebird had no engine or trans but the body was like new same with the interior, and it sold within a week. The Husts/OLDS was driven to my house, had a smashed quarter and the new quarter in the GM box. Nobody would step up and buy it, there were boxes of NOS parts and a new decal set. Got pissed one Sunday and removed the T tops, doors, hood and trunk lid, treated Mr. Saws-All to a new blade and cut it in half sideways and fore & aft, advertized it as a quartered Hurst/OLDS. Had to listen to all the "what's a quartered OLDS?" questions, followed by "Those cars are valueable, how could you do that!!" Easy, nobody would give me $500.00 for it, now there is one less in the world, yours is now worth more, what do you want to buy? Cleared over $2,000.00 on the POS.:D

  29. I've got a thread on my 54 GMC running, I got it for $340.00. all I wanted was the 58 cad heads and tri-power manifold that was on it. but it ran so good that I decided to cut the truck in a few places to make it fit my style. I'm in it $817.00 as of now and figure another grand to finish it. but when its done I could probably sell it for at least $350.00 hehe!
