I am just getting into Flatheads, and I want to learn as much as possible. What are your suggestions on the best books about flatheads. I have seen books, on rebuilding, performance, etc... What have you read that helped you? Thanks!
Agree with Tman and rschilp..There aren't that many books out there, get them all..And Bruce knows his stuff
Ron Holleran's book, Nostalgia Rebuilding and Modifying the Flathead Ford V-8. "Ford flathead V-8 Techno site" is a collection of information that is tough to beat. Do the google thing and it should come up. There are some books out there that are not worth all that much. Some of the old reprints are good to read but I have not got alot out of them. Once you find the flathead techno site, they also have a forum that is very informative. JWL's book, Flathead Facts is another good book. You can hook up to that one over at the flathead techno site. O.k I didnt know anything about flthds cept I wanted one.Mine needed a rebuild who better than you to do it. I bought three books rebuilding the famous ford flathead by Ron Bishop very good but seemed like it was for stock,#2Ford Flathead v-8 builders Handbook by Frank Oddo liked it tons of info, but the one I really liked was How to build ford flathead v8 horsepower by George Nicholl.I read them all over and over.
diddo on "tman" and "flthd"....read ever printed page you can find, 2 great books are "Ford Flathead V-8 Builder's Handbook 1932-1953" by Frank Oddo and "Flathead fever" by Mike Davidson". Motor City Flatheads in Detroit has an excellent forum as well.......good luck with your build.............
I've got most all of the ones listed above and a couple more besides and each one has it's own merits and adds to your knowledge. The Tex Smith book is a good first one as it is easy to read and is aimed more towards building street motors. The Ron Bishop book is the other one I would check out if I was just getting into these engines.
During the 90's when Motor City Flathead in Dundee, MI was going strong, Mark Kirby (owner) had 5 or 6 good articles about building flatheads in Street Rodder Magazine. Worth reading.
