Which are the best traditional hotrod magazines available worldwide? - I don't need to see any more pictures of 'ratrods', tatooed gypsies, push bikes, strange peircings, 350/350 combos, radial tyres or alternators. More of this sort of thing: I like to read the detail, tech stuff, how-toos etc. Like the JJ I guess, but printed out so that I can read it on the thunderpot. Mark
I stopped ALL my Magazine subscriptions. No more rags coming to my house. At one point in time I had 4 different magazines coming. The HAMB works better for me plus if you want to see diifferent shots or angles on a car, the owner usually is happy to post. "shameless self promotion is king" Tech info is readilly abundent just ask for it. if you must hometown hottrodder is a good one. TA-TA Haney
i'll give you my list- the rodder's journal mag-neto magazine (yeah, it's back...) hop up with that, you can be happy.
I have been buying 1950s and 1960s magazines on Ebay, usually $2-$5 each. I lucked out and got the entire 1960 Car Craft for $40.
"Best" is really subjective. Before I launch into a plan for you I'll ask this; what magazines are in your local bookshops? You might Google traditional hot-rod magazines and take a peek online. I had an interest in die-cast models, found a British magazine either online or in Boarders (a chain bookseller) and subscribed.
My local bookshops? Nothing to write home about - 'Custom Car', which I currently subscribe to about the UK scene here and 'ol skool rods', which I'm not impressed with at all - too much of the stuff mentioned in my first post and not enough detail on the cars. I should have mentioned - I'm in England, so I would need to get the mag shipped to me. Mark
I read allot of them for different reasons. But I only have a subscription to the Rodders Journal. Church rules too...
Spot on. Plus 50's only little books. Tattooed gypsies turn me off a mag straight away, Ill flick through them, but wont buy. I picked on up the other day, and the chick was the focus, I want to see the car, not a chick that wants to look like a sailor in silk stockings. If i want to see cars, I buy a car mag. If I want to have a crank i'll buy ****........it shouldnt be hard.
I just buy the old mags, same price and you could always get your money back out of them, better content, ive learned more from the originals than any new mags
yup I get 20 plus mags a month...TRJ, Hemmings , ROD+CUSTOM ,HOT ROD .... ROLLS + PLEATS , COLLECTOR CAR CAR CRAFT , GOOD GUYS ETC. I ALSO HAVE LARGE COLLECTION OF EARLY CAR MAGAZINES .. I feel the varied coverage of all cars , race ,rods, stockers , cl***ics..... helps build knowledge for puttin rods to together... I CLIP AND SAVE LOTSA STUFF FROM HERE TOO If you focus to much ON "THE LIFE STYLE" everything will look the same ... black primer, red wheels three carb manifolds , skull knobs , pinstriping ... not that there is any thing wrong with that! i saved the 3window pic from this thread i like it mucho
I've said this before, but since you asked, I dig Traditional Rod & Kulture Illustrated. It's about 'the cars', is a good size, good quallity and consistant. It's also made predominantly by a couple of HAMBers.
rodders journal magneto hop up kustoms illustrated rolls and pleats those are my personal favorites i have about 400 or so of the original "little mags" from the 50s,,there were around 5 or 6 different ***les (rod and custom, customs illustrated, car craft, honk, etc, etc),,these are THE BEST in my opinion.........
The best traditional magazine there is- http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/ Get yourself a laptop and a wireless set up and you can take it to the ****per with you.
There is a program that comes standard w/ some Mac OS's, really kick*** called Zinio. I looked into it awhile back, but aside from Car Craft and Hot Rod, all the car mags offered are import and lowrider, not my bag. It gets the mag emailed to you, and you save it on ur comp reading it when you want, I guess with a nice external you would have your own datebase to reference whenever you want but there is nothing custom oriented there. Beat.

CHURCH! I absolutely love that magazine, gorgeous photography in every issue. Colby does an amazing job putting together each one. And it has the best intro of any zine, as quoted in issue No. 1: " Sorry. No intro. No tech. No articles. No interviews. No crying baby dolls." "Church. Cars. Not culture." http://carsnotculture.com/international/index.htm
