have you considered no mufflers? straight true duals that reduce down to 1 7/8" motorcycle tail pipes
Resonators may be your answer. In the past I have had dual turbo mufflers with resonators where a cat would e and it quieted things down alot, but kept its throaty burble. I just used the resonator recommended by the exhaust guy, so I can't help you select the right size. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
I used Spin Tech mufflers/exhaust system on my 66 Mustang, because I didn't want it to sound like a 5.0. Check out their website. Very pleased with the sound. I got the entire system with side exhaust and would do it again. BOutlaw
I'm running two mufflers from Stainless Specialties on the sbf in my 27. When they say stainless is forever they aren't kidding, mine have been on there for about 25 years and still look like new. They have several different sound levels available and I went down the middle when I chose mine. They have a nice enough rumble to let people know there is a healthy motor in there but they quiet down going down the road so you aren't beat up from the noise. I am only running 2 inch pipes because I didn't have a lot of room underneath, but that size has worked out fine. Don
had my saleen mustang since itwas new in 1990 hated the sound of flowmasters since day one so i've never used them. my .02 is walker dynomax super turbo mufflers. nice sound at idle not super loud or expensive
What ever Ford put on the '65 Hi-Po Mustangs. The oldman bought one new, and that pissed-off little 289 had a distinct sound all it's own. I recall there were integrel resonators at the rear, just before the slight factory turndown in the pipe. They did not come through rear valance (ala GT). Man that thing sounded good!
Ford originally put the Arvinode exhaust system on the Hi-po 289 mustangs. It was heavily engineered, specifically designed for the Hi-po and I absolutely love the sound. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnFXyLgcvLg I put the system on a '66 GT Mustang I owned. People that listened to the video and then my car, said it sounded way better in person. I got great comments from everyone on the sound. It sounded very "old school". A nice mellow rumble at idle and killer at WOT. And didn't resonate up through the floorboards like Flowmasters. It has the mufflers just past the h-pipe and resonators in the back. The mufflers are definitely designed "in-and-out", so you have to make sure you install them correctly. I liked it so much, I called Waldon's exhaust and they said they will sell the mufflers by themselves, instead of buying the whole system. I want to put then on my Falcon Sprint. You'll love 'em!
Diameter and length of the tail pipes will make a difference, too. Think trumpet vs. tuba; a 2" pipe will have a distinctly different note than a 2 1/2" one, even with the same mufflers. A long tailpipe has a much different sound (usually more mellow) than the same system that just dumps out the end of the muffler. I have a SBC in the roadster with 2" pipes, Smitthy's, and no crossover. Good vintage hot rod sound, not loud, no drone. OTOH, the Jag has an SBC, 2 1/4" pipes, a Magnaflow tru-X center muffler, and resonators. TOTALLY different sound from the same kind of engine.
I had a 302 with a 3-speed manual trans in a '50 Ford coupe that was set up with short gl*** packs and really small dual exhaust (less than 2" diameter) all the way to the rear bumper. It sounded great! It was not all that loud, especially at idle, did not drone in the car, and made the car sound much faster than it really was when you got on it. I believe the exhaust pipes were actually for a flathead and they just spliced the 302 manifold downpipes right in. It was a great sound, not obnoxious, and sounded NOTHING like a new Mustang.
Not sure about the sound on a 302, but I would consider PORTER mufflers. The stainless versions are really nice. Kinda like a gl***pack or smitty's in design. TP
I am one who also likes Spintechs ( I dig the raspy sound) but Hush-power (made by Flowmaster) sound good on a 289-302-351W. I had Powerstick Mufflers (Cl***ic chambered mufflers) on a 63 Falcon with a 289/302 it turned a few heads also. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJBJtdThFpc Stainless Works, Cl***icchambered, GMMG and Mr. T's Automotive carry this style.
Cherry Bombs, 2.25" pipes, and of course headers....... My 351W sounds great with 'em.....So did the 302 that formerly resided under the hood....... 4TTRUK
Try duals - no crossover - 2" pipe with purple hornies ( if they still make em ) Sound very unique and mean when you get on it
