what is the best way to go. I saw; water filled convention electric heater
with small fan, regular electric with small fan, oil filled radiator ,and ceramic heater, all plug ins.anyone use any of these? It would be for a

I've tried most of them at one time or another,,,,why not check out one of the motel room type units for heat and air,,,make it a lot more comfortable to work,,,

we bought 5 when one of the local motels were upgrading,,,50 bucks each.

Kerosene heaters work well but you must have a source of fresh air while it is in use. HRP

Get one of those "free" hand-crafted amish fireplaces.....

Seriously any small overhead gas unit would be a good choice. I'd stay away from a house or mobile home furnace unless you have it several feet off the floor. Several years ago a local rodder had his garage blow sky high from gas fumes torching his chev coupe.

    I have one of these in my house garage;

    http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_21340_21340

My garage is 18x24, well insulated. This time of year I'll put my work boots in front of it to dry them. If I forget to turn it off the garage'll be 75+ in the morning. That's with the thermostat 1/3-1/2 way up. Runs less than 15 min/hr(never timed it) to keep that temp.

I love my Hot Dawg by Modine. It heats the garage up fast and seems pretty efficient and I have not had a single problem in 4 years.

i've used those propane ones with the big heater element on it.
they work well but you need ventilation.

  12. i'll post this pic so you can get a little better idea of the size.

Does anyone have the Dayton Electric Space Heater 5600 Watt ? Just got one and does not seem to be heating well. Is the whole element supposed to glow red when on high? Only a fraction is glowing. Any help would be great.

    Thanks

I used a small Dayton in my 30 X 40 shop; it could just about run you out of there it worked so well. Mine wasn't as small as the one shown here, but I'd bet that one would work really well for you. It is more costly than buying a cheap plug in portable from Wally World, but well worth it.

  15. I've been using a small Dayton for over 20 yr's in my 20x20 uninsulated shop, works very well, but of co**** our winters are mild.

I have had a 5kw heater similar to 50mercfan's for 30 years and no problems. It heats a 32x24 garage and it has no open flame, which is a plus in my situation.

Same heater in my garage. Insualted mostly, could always use more, but within 30 min I could work in a sweatshirt in 10 deg weather.

I have 2 the same as 50mercfan. They work great. Got a thermostat and the heater coils are sealed for safety. 28x32 workshop. I liked the idea of the hot dawg but did not want to go with propane.

I use a double burner "Mr Heater" propane heater and it does a fine job of getting the chill out. As for the ventilation, I've never done anything special, but my garage has 10ft ceilings and is 24x36, plus an open stairwell that leads to an 8 ft ceiling up stairs that's 12x36, so maybe that's enough free space for whatever fumes there are.

I put a wood/coal stove in mine. It's a little bit of a pain but I burn skids and free wood. You can work in shorts.Takes up a little room but I move it when it gets warm. They are not for everybody.I like it.

  22. Dennis:
My garage is 24x36 and I have a 30,000 btu 5 element ceramic gas heater placed at either end. Most of the time I only run one on the lowest setting(one element activated)and it will maintain a temp of around 60 degrees regardless of the outside temp. With the other one activated,I work in shirtsleeves and am totally comfortable.
The secret is insulation.Walls are R35(I think that is the #)and the ceiling is reflective 1"foam board with 9" of loose insulation above. One thing you do have to remember is to leave a little air gap at the doors or the heaters(which are ventless)will not function properly.
Don't recall the name of the heaters but I bought them at Quality Farm and Fleet(a local supply)for about $120 each.Plumbed a gas line from the house and had a friend(who is a certified plumber)hook them up.
The average cost to run them is about $30 a month.

stop right there. buy AMERICAN. even if it is used.

  24. Put a bigger forced hot air furnace in the house, put the old one in the garage, heats up in just a few miniutes. Use a 35 gallon drum for the fuel oil, can get, the oil, it at our gas station in PA.

first off dont shop at walmart.........next are you going to paint in your garage if so dont use an asmaferic burner (gas fired) your garage could go boom. if you want to do it wright us a sealed combustion radiant tube heater they **** air from outside your garage for combustion and they heat objects not the air. you can lay on the floor in this kind of weather and be comfortable thay are the cats ***. i have 20 years exp in comercial/industrial heating and cooling...........and my garage has NO HEAT but if i ever get off my *** thats how i will do it

  26. Here's the bomb I use.............I use diesel fule, easier to get. I'm not dead yet.

I have two of them, I bought both of them at a local flea market at different times one was new in the box, I have less than 100.00 in the pair I did'nt know what they cost new untill a friend was looking for a heater and we saw one at home depot, I was very happy:). One is in my 24 by 26 garage and it heats up very fast, the other is in my 30 by 30 shop and I use it along with a inferred propane heater, it does ok.

  30. Go to a farm store buy a milk house heater. 220volts 4800 watts. It will have a house style plug on it. (like a dryer) Buy a welder plug and change it. (instructions come in the welder plug box.) I am ***uming you have a welder plug in your shop. Dont use an extension . Just use the heater close to the plug. I heat a 800 sqfoot shop with mine. Takes about 1/2 hour even last week in the bitter bitter cold. I was a balmy 57F which is fine for working. I bought mine here at Canadian Tire for $69.95 , also Princess Auto has them for $79.95 and they do mail oder from their website. Unit is small but works very well. It has a thermostatic control as well. I dont leave it on since it is strong enough do the job although I could leave it on a low setting. . It is about 1 cubic foot in size and has no open parts so is not a fire hazard.
