Technical Best sealant for iron spark plug insert in aluminum head?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by ct1932ford, May 27, 2023.

  1. I have one steel/iron spark plug insert on my 21 stud flathead. It has original Eddie Myers aluminum heads. I was searching for a bit of stumble on the car. I change spark plugs awhile back and must have broke the seal on the insert. Today when pulling the plugs I noticed it. What would be the best thing to reseal it with upon reassembly ?

Try Green locktite. Anything I use the green on is a bear to remove.

  3. Thanks Ron, I need it to seal and take the heat and cooling cycles.

  4. I use red high strength loctite .

If you use the green that’s a “ bearing retaining “ loctite

Use the narrow gap one . There are 2 types of green .

Loctite 272 (red) it rated to 392 degrees. It will also seal threads if they are in reasonable condition.

  10. We use that on the ot fords that blow the spark plugs out of the head. Ford recommends it for installing the insert. Never a problem.

  11. I think that is the way I'm going. Thanks

Another Loctite solution: Retaining compound #66141
As close to a lifetime bond as you can get. Used in steel mills to secure bearings on rollers.

  13. I contacted JB Weld Company technical support and amazingly they recommended a Loctite product! They suggested possibly # 272. Also to contact Loctite. I did just that and was told 272 would work but suggested I use # 263 that has a higher torque spec.
Nice to get some great service from both companies.
Thanks to all who posted their thoughts and recommendations.

Thanks for letting us know! A lot of ppl get on here, ask for suggestions and then just disappear. Nice to know what those in the industry reccommend.

  15. Well. I work on OT crap, junk all the time every day. What the industry says will work is also hit and miss. Time tells if certain repairs hold up or not. But I think you will just fine with that repair.;) Carry on brother. No worries.:)
