Hi Guys, late Jan 08 me and a couple of buddies from the UK are staying in Anaheim for the GNRS. We couldn't find a listing for the Long Beach swap meet, so booked accommodation in Turlock for the Sunday swap meet there, its a long haul 350mile. Now we find out the Long Beach swap meet is on when when we are there after all the 27th Jan 08. So is it worth the long drive to go to the Turlock meet or would we be much better off, cancelling the Turlock accommodation and going to the Long Beach one instead. Your input would be mucho appreciated cheers. Holmsey www.uk-hotrods.co.uk
I don't know anything about the Long Beach swap. But I guarantee the Turlock Swap would be worth the drive.
Depends on what route you take. I-5 is terrible. No scenery at all, but easily the fastest route. HWY 99 would be a bit better, but not much, and would take a bit longer. Easily, driving north up the coast, and then cutting over would be the best "drive". But also the longest. My advice would be to take the coast on either they way up or the way down. And take I-5 or 99 for the other. You could easily make an enjoyable day of the drive up the coast. But the trip up or down the 5 or 99 would be afew hours of nothing.
A buddy and I went to Turlock this past Jan. and drove 11 hrs to get there. I say it was well worth it. Cheaper than Pomona Swapmeet and good overall experience. Never been to Long beach meet, so I could not say wether it'd be better or not? But turlock was a lot of fun.
Cheers Guys for the input. We will be driving up to Turlock around 2am to be there for around 7am when it starts. So the I-5 would be ok and do the coastal route back maybe take in a rod shop on the way back.
Hi Doug cant do Saturday as we are at the Grand National Roadster show that day and also the Donut Derelicts in the morning. Any must see Rod shops we should do?
Our Boss attended 3 meets every year on the west coast flying in from TX. Turlock, Long Beach and Portland.
Turlock it is then cheers. Dont know if we go near San Francisco. Had a guy with a whole load of Trucks on a ranch by Turlock say we can go look round so that should be cool. Thanks again.
i think the January Turlock is the BIG ONE. i heard the good stuff comes out for the January show, so i would probably visit that over the Long Beach show. i'll probably be heading out to the Turlock show for my first time come January.
Turlock is on Hwy 99. once over the G****vine on Hwy 5 take 99 North. It will drop you off about 1 mile from the swapmeet.
Turlock is waay better, especially for early parts. ****py weather is common; bring boots and rain gear.
One last tip - go early! I mean 5am early. California guys seem to be in line for car things by 6 to 7am and be back home in the shop (or napping, lol) by 4pm. It's weird.
Hey Bob would be great to have a beer or three. We get there on the Thursday stopping at the Anaheim Plaza, until the following Wed. You being a veteran So-Cal visitor you can tell us the places we must visit. Thankz for directions Choptop, We intend to get to swap about 7am.
Don't go to Turlock, it's a complete waste of time..... (we've got enough compe***ion there already.....)
January Turlock rocks. I had junk piled 4 feet high on my radio flyer swap meet wagon last year by the time I left.
the anaheim plaza, sounds like your staying in a shopping mall,!!!!it will be motel 6 for me or reidys floor if i go with wayne,
Jan 26-27...I never forget it 'cause my lady's birthday usually falls on that weekend and I have yet to convince her that the swap is a romantic getaway There might be a couple spots in my truck if anyone needs a ride from Sacramento on Sat....PM me. Bryan
I live in Modesto, just 20 min. north of Turlock. If you are driving up from So Cal. Take Hwy 99. You can drive just as fast on 99 as you can on I-5 and there aren't any stop lights on 99 (or I-5). Hwy 99 goes right through Turlock, you won't have to cross over. The swap meet is at the Fairgrounds less than 2 miles (east) from 99...the signs for the Fairgrounds are clearly marked for directions. ...99 is a no brainer. If you want to add several hours to the drive home, take the scenic coastal Hwy 1... When you get over the mountain p*** from LA and drop down into the valley you'll have the choice of veering off to I-5 or going straight on 99...go straight...trust me.
Also be prepared for fog. It can be thick. This time of year the weather there in the valley might just seem like home to you!
damnit i'm going to miss it.....it's the same weekend as gnrs and i have to house sit with dogs. ahhhh there's always next year. as far as sat morn go to the anti delic breakfast.....use the search function to find out.
