Hi I've got 59 Caddy tailights in mine and i really don't like them now. I quite like stock 51 Merc ones. What are the best ones of them all? Thanks Neil
Do a search on this forum. There's a thread with lots of pictures and ideas. I agree that 59 Caddy bullets are overplayed and not quite right for a Merc.
oooooo this is a fun one. just ask nick "chopnweld" the tail fins are easier for a foreign light to adapt to than the 49-50, i would just start looking at 50's taillights and front parking lights. sometimes you need to get creative.
You said it yourself, if you like the 51's , go with it. All you are going to get here is what somebody else likes. Personally if I ran across a pair I would consider putting '51 Lincoln T' lights in mine.
drdave here on the HAMB has Lee custom lenses for a '54 Chevy on his '51 Merc and I really like the look http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/album.php?albumid=3019&pictureid=342796
'53 Lincoln, hands down... If they're not placed too far out. I like how John DeAugustino did his on the one Rod Powell built for him years ago.
I think the first question you have to ask yourself is are you going for any kind of period look or just whatever catches your eye... I think taillights are a very individual decision. To encourage you.... my old '59 caddy taillights and what i have now ('53 chrysler)...
53 or 54 Pontiac station wagon tail lights look good, but they are super rare. Some early 50's Desoto tail lights look "killer" also.
Canadian '51 Mercury Monarch ('51 baby-Lincoln tail lights have same lenses but different and wider chrome trim below the housings) In my mind the Mercury Monarch / baby-Lincoln tail lights are the best one, and if mounted in stock position a bolt-on on any '51 Mercury. These are my own choice as well but without the trim below and mounted in a lower position.
I had dual 59 Caddy lights frenched in separate holes in my 51 and the gent who bought it from me replaced them with 56 Chevy lenses as he thought they filled the hole better and he didn't want them to stick out as far. 53 or 56 Chevy bullet tail lights might give the car a different look while not creating a lot of extra work.
There's a local Merc with (I think) 56 DeSoto tails in it, with the quarters extended back to match the point on the chrome trim. It's pretty hot. Wish I could find a picture of it.
Year's ago Dick Dean put a pair of '51-'52 Chrysler lenses in a '51 Merc. They looked cool and had a lot of people guessing. Jonnie www.legends.thewwbc.net
Don't know who's merc this is, but, those late 70's ford tail lights just look right and might be a little easier to find.
I disagree. If god himself came down from heaven and told me either it was a merc with 70's F.M.C. taillights or no merc at all, Id drive a Nissan.
