I need to shorten and bend a new hook on my brake pedal return spring. Should I heat where I am going to bend it and let it cool slowly, or just bend it cold? It is a fairly heavy guage wire, a little thicker than a coat hanger....Fido
Bend it cold. If you really want to,after bending, stress relieve it at 500 degrees F. Use your Wife's oven, when she's not watching. Tell her I said it was OK.
Learned my lesson about the oven, she was suppose to be shopping all day, I had painted some parts and put em in to bake....boy was she pissed when she came home early to a smokey house
Well if you reheat it it's going to loose a bunch of its elasticity and finally settle in a position.. If you bend her cold, she'll be a bit brittle were the bend is.. So it's a 50-50, my choice would be bend her cold.. If you send me the specs I may have one close I could send you in a prehard state, most spring steels are pre hard to ease in forming.. Then hardend or heat treated later on in a final process.. Thanks continentaljohn
