While tomorrow I'm goin to cut a panel out of the old van to use as a floor for my pinto what is the best way to weld it in?

  2. If you have at least an inch of old floor all around the perimeter, i would suggest laying the floors on top of that and plug welding to the old floor. Otherwise a fillet weld with the floor ****ed into the rocker will suffice.

Go with what pete said, but make ssure you have nice shiny metal on BOTH peices you are welding. If you don't have clecos, use self drilling screws to hold the metal tightly together, space them and inch or two apart, and pull them one at a time, weld, and move on to the next one. And if you're not already, run with .025 wire to avoid blow-through when you weld.....

**** them up together and spot weld it all the way around to properly seal it.

Lapping it will definitely work, but water will get into the lap joins and stay there, then you've got to re-do it a few years down the track because of rust. No matter how tight you lap it together when you do it, at some time the paint will crack, the body and ch***is will torque and water will get in.

Do what you feel will work man. That isn't some hippie answer. If it will work....try it and learn.

From the little bit I've been through in the auto world compared to greats like Barris...YOU have to learn. It's a friggin Pinto. Just go for it. If you get rot from the overlap, I bet it won't be your problem by then.

Car people love cars period. We rarely get attatched other than memories. Somebody w/ big pockets and less sense will see it and give you the offer. It just happens.

  6. If you lap metal i suggest weld thru primering both sides of the metal that will meet. I also suggest using drip check or some sort of seam sealer on all of your floor seams.
