You are correct on that, as far as I know the last Cougar GT-E's built got the 428 Cobra Jet. The Cougar GT-E was the last car you could buy from Ford equipped with a 427 and it was the only 1968 car with a 427. There were 357 GT-E's built, 37 of those had the 428.

This one, 1968 Mercury Cougar GT-E 427 Coupe, sold for $181,500 at auction a couple of years ago.

"Things move fast so you have to really be on your toes. When bidding you have to listen closely to the auctioneer AND watch where he is looking to see if he is actually getting bids on what he calls. You could raise your hand at 800 and he'll point to you and say 900, now 1000.
I always try to spot the shill bidders. They'll jump in for awhile in the middle, then jump back out prior to the close and will never actually win an auction.
Having said that, most auctions are straight up, but I've attended a few that had some obvious shady stuff going on."

I understand the price going up quickly. What I don't like is the price coming down after is is up. Not a good auction practice. I attend at least 3 auction a week for 20+ years. So I have a good idea as to what is going on. Some are better than others. Just because they are the big guy dosen't mean they are the best.

Now I'm a little confused, I've watched this several times again. I hear an opening bid of $800, then I hear he is trying for $900. I hear him asking for $850. A female voice chimes in $1500. So he asks for $1600. I hear a female voice say $1600. I hear him asking for $1700 then I hear a female voice say $1800 so he asks for $1900. Then the buyer gal asks if she is in, he says, "yes you are pumpkin". He says $1900 another time or to and she tells him her bid was $1700. He kind of mumbles a little then asks for $1750 a few times and quickly bumps it off to the buyer gal.

I'm still not 100% sure what was going on there and I was there making the video.

Exactly why one with no motor or trans is a deal at 5500. The right engine will be found and if it ends up with a solid lifter 427/425 hp engine instead of the correct hyd lifter 427/390 hp version, I don't think anyone is going to cry about it. They're pretty cool cars in their own right, even if it is o/t here on this forum

  5. I know where two of the 427's are , however the guy will not sell them for ANY price....$35,000 for (1) was turned down

When I first heard about the auction in September, I thought about harvest, makes no sense, especially traveling with all the farm equipment moving around.
(been there done that, followed a convoy of tractors for 15 miles once)

Did you get behind one of those tractor rides?

I wish they had picked a different weekend for that September auction, I was planning on going but my wife got her planner out and now she tells me that the our son, daughter in law and grandson are coming to our house that weekend to celebrate our grandson's first birthday.
