I was camping up in NY over the 4th and met up with Gary (gjcat56) to go look at a GMC. I should be bringing it home sometime in September. Good thing I am moving to 5 acres next week...I'll need the room. It's a 1959 GMC 370 series LCF. Pontiac V8, manual ******, with power steering.
LCF stands for low cab forward. The truck has a "tag" axle on it. Shane was really excited to see it and discoverd it has a factory powersteering unit. It really isn`t much bigger than Bertha. He got the $0.50 tour of the yard mud and all! There are a few really neat 50-60s trucks there yet. Should have seen the Amnish looking at his truck on the way up & back to the truck yard!.
Its GMC's version of what Big Bertha started out as. Tag axles is going. Either going to be a roll back or ramp truck. Just found a trailer big enough for it to come home on.
You would know better than I, but it sure looks to be a bit bigger series truck. The door is different with the front of it kicked out to the fender and then the fender has the access door in it. I don't think that it is just the difference between chevy and gmc. Are you going to update the drivetrain etc or leave the poncho mtr in it? I vote a 8.2L 505" ***mins 6BT, the big brother to the 5.9L and a 9 spd roadranger.
the cab and doors are the same as big bertha. The front clip is where the difference is. The wheel opening is also a little different. BB has part of the wheel opening on the cab and part on the fender. Thinking of keeping the poncho motor. It is also a 2 1/2 ton model and BB was a 2 ton.
What you call a tag axle is that like a lazy axle with no drive or is it a tandem drive ? I like the plans.
What we call a Tag axle around here is just an axle ***y,springs, & spring hangers that was welded to the rear frame. No drive and no brakes.
I think you should graft in a 54-56 Caddy front bumper (with the "****s") and call it Betha's sister.
Well, just know that I am rooting for yet another cl***ic four door chevy truck in the world. I absolutely love what you did with Bertha. JML
HOTFR8, here in the states a tag is behind the driven axle and a pusher is in front of the driven axle. Both are "lazy". Usually they are liftable.
Made it up and back with no issues. It just fit on the trailer I brought. Thanks again Garry for helping me out with getting this. Now I have to decide just what I am going to do with it.
How did it tow? I wondered if you got home OK! I just found a truck up the road with I think 22.5s steels There parting out.
