I am considering putting "Big and littles" on my Studebaker chassis because of Studebaker's strong performance heritage. In bench racing with my friends, some thought the orginal reason of big rear tires and little front tires was to copy the salt flat cars, or early drag race cars.

It was recently discovered that this is not the case, the early hot rodders were trying to capture the performance look of Studebakers.

Here is the photographic evidence that predates the salt flat cars.

  3. Bigs'n'littles came about because someone put big tires on the back of there hooptie to gain a perfomance edge and someone else liked the way it looked. It was a common thing to put taller tires on the back of a dry lakes racer to gain a little overall gear for more top end.
