Yep, thats right, Big Olds needs a new "look". Been pondering this for about a year now. I've been sitting on the fence for quite a while now trying to decide in which direction I want to take him. As Just Steve alluded to in another post, my original thoughts were geared more toward the "streetrod" look since thats what I was fimiliar with and where my roots were. I had my heart set on a beige cloth top, dark purple shiney paint, custom wheels and a SBC. That was then, this is now.

I've always been under the impression some cars are better suited for certain looks while others aren't. I've come to the conclusion, after MONTHS of thinking about this, that Big Olds persoanlity just isn't suited for that look.

With all that being said, I have choosen to take Big Olds in a direction that I've never explored before. I've NEVER had a hot rod with steel wheels. I've NEVER had a hot rod with hubcaps. I've NEVER had a hot rod with wide white walls.

I know my good buddy JohnB is choking on his corn flakes right now reading this. [IMG]

Instead of the beige cloth top that I really wanted, I've chosen to go with a white vinyl top. Instead of the Americans he has on him now, I'll be changing those out to painted steel ones with maybe Olds Feista spinners with, of course, wide white walls, and they won't be Coker [IMG] Can you say Diamond Backs? [IMG]

I have also chosen the "paint" treatment. I wanna go with a shiny, dark copper. Not a lite, or bright copper, but a dark copper. I think I'm going to go with a copper tinted primer first, drive around like that for awhile to see if I really like it, then the shiny.

The interior will be black with copper trim, and maybe alittle animal print inserts [IMG] with both the black and copper material being flat, not shiny or pearl.

These thoughts have been a long time in coming. I don't take to change easily but I'm tired of Big Olds's dull, faded, lifeless, black primer. I need a change and so does Big Olds.

Here's where you guys come in. I have the visison in my head and hopefully have described it in enough detail what I want for Big Olds. Have at it photochoppers. [IMG]

The big ugly bumper thingy in the middle has got to go! [IMG] but the hunky dude in the drivers seat can stay [IMG]

Actually I was eating oatmeal. I ate the cornflakes when I got up at 5am this morning. I told you all along that one day you would see the light. I'm so proud of you right now I could cry. I told you time and again that you'd like this place. A lot better then the other place you hung out at for so long. We love ya here.

  4. Well, John B beat me to it. All over the world, there are men with tears in their eyes. Glad to see ya come around. But you stole my color... if I were to ever get a car to put it on [IMG].

    See ya next Saturday.

You talking 57 Chebby "Cl***ic Copper" Denise?
Or a lighter brighter color like Trucks Magazine "Copperhead"?

I like your plans except for the full wheel covers. I'd have to go with center caps but that's just me.
I can't help but wonder if another rear bumper would work on the front. If not a section job on the existing center hunk to slim it down and a "save the salt" plaque mounted on it should make it look better...
Also, I'd have to go with the tan top if using copper paint

Denise, the only suggestion I will make is to "smooth" the bumpers, then rechrome.
I think your plan is a good one. What I like about it, it will make big Olds yours.
Thanks for sharing your plans with us, and, Remember, we are Visualanimals. Pics, Pics, Pics.

I might agree with the beige top over the white with the dark copper. I guess I'll have to see some versions of it first. Sounds like a good plan though. Full wheel covers are cool and there are a lot of choices if you really look around.

That's a a lot of car (big car) for copper, but it might work if it's on the darker side of the spectrum. If you go with white walls I agree with Rocky chrome smoothies would look good or maybe even some Caddilac wheel covers and you might want to consider fender skirts as well.

Here's a couple of old ads. One is gold the other yellow and both have skirts.

Someone had pics of Big olds little brother in grey primer, with chrome white walls and smoothies on it.

Hell I'd been trying to talk you into an extra set of smoothies and white walls for an alternate look for a while, glad to hear you looking for a change.

I swear I didn't put him up to saying that.Even though I've been telling you for a long time now. I'm glad you finally admit to having a kustom soul.

  15. Alright Denise, now you're talkin'!! [IMG] I think you've got a really good plan goin', but of course you know you're gonna get ALOT of opinions! I agree with Rocky about the wheels...I think it would look smoother. I'm also inclined to think the interior should be, at least, satin if not full gloss. I think the color, top & tires you wanna do sound GREAT, though!

    Denise,
We need to know if the top is going to be chopped or stock. As good as it looks here bagged, I'd keep your stance as you have it. You've got a proven drive train setup with all the miles you've put on it.

    Wow!
    Good going grrl!!!
Some of my favorite colors are gold, copper, bronze, and brown.
I think the car will lok great painted that way, and I'm all for the white top, but I'm not sure about the black interior working with it. Since you drive ******* that black vinyl will be an egg (and thigh) frier in the sun. (But maybe absorbing some sun rays is a pluss up there in the "arctic"? Maybe you should stick with shades of tan, beige, and bronze inside too, with a metallic weave cloth insert like "show cars" used in the late 50s-60s.
This Ford Barris did for Frank Monteleone has my favoite color combination on it, I especially like the Bronze (root beer?) color.

and the idea of the interior in this car and it's second generation have the interior colors I'd run in the Olds, although I'd go with more of a Bronze than a gold to match the outside color.

I'm thinking the black interior, might look out of place. That's what I thought about the black and white interior in "S****e" I didn't think it went with the Purple paint. They were both dark but the wrong darks for each other. Does that make any sense?

I'm sure you are aware of it, but I'll mention it if you aren't. It appears the Big Olds' left fender is low in front as is the bumper, either that or the hood is out of align, or twisted, but I suspect it's the fender, and the front bumper is low there too and off center. Probably all adjustable with shims in the right places...
It's gonna be a great looking car... not that it isn't already! [IMG] [IMG]

I like that plan . .. always liked copper metallic!

Denise, I also have a care package I'm sending off to you . . . I uncovered my oversized art envelope and in it I found a bunch of Olds magazine ads, along with some original pencil sketches that Eric Aurand did . . . some very tasty kustom ideas there.

You gonna be at PRI? If so I can bring 'em along.

Denise! Don't do it! Resurrect your old Chevy thru Big Olds. Let it rise from the ashes! You'll get tired of cleaning those damn whitewalls.

Denise, the good part about a wheel-tire change is it can be temporary. You can change the looks of a car in minutes to fit your taste.
Hang on to the old wheels and throw em up in the attic. In case you don't like the outcome.

That's what I am gonna do with the wagon. Throw some www on the steelies and if I get tired of that look I'll put my AR torque thrusts back on.

    denise,

all other things being equal, i would prefer to paint steel wheels to contrast with, compliment, or match the body color and use "dog dish" caps.

hope that you like it, however it turns out.

personally, i don't like fender skirts on anything...

I agree..........the only thing that looks good with skirts is women. And the shorter the better.

Denise, I agree with Hooligan, you are going to make Bo Huff a very happy man. I like the idea of the whites with the olds covers but don't like the white top, I think that you need a tan to go with the car color. Don't know about the black interior as much as you drive it, gets hotter than hell while sitting in the sun. Way to go Girl!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Denise, I am so glad you've come around. Since the first time I saw that car, I've thought about how it just begged to be a big beautiful custom and your plans sound very tasty.

The orginal designers of that car meant for it to be a sled. So shall it be.
