This could (well almost) be your car, Denise.

I see an Olds like yours more as kustomfodder than an hotrod. Imagine it set up like like Harry Ogdens old 41 Buick on the pics, only with a dark rootbeer/copper paintjob and without the skirts. Its basically a chopped windshield, a nice carsonstyle top (or white vinyl convertibletop [IMG] ), an even, low stance (no rake, and not lowrider-low), a couple of Appletons, taillights in the bumperguards (how about those Olds bumperguards that had lights in them from the factory), and probably some cleanup in the front. Your ideas for wheels would work fine.

If anyone have a picture of the Ogden Buick in its original early fifties configuration, it did not run any skirts (I know there is a pic in one of the Barris tech books). Anyhow that pic would show what Im talking about pretty good.

  3. Hey kid,
Perfect description. The Big Olds will be as sweet as it gets in copper (dark). There's a guy up here in St Jo doin' a Plymouth coupe in the color you're lookin' for.

The wide whites and Steelies are cool but I never have been much of a hubcap man.I think I'd probably go with sombreros or maybe some of those rippley things if I had to have caps. Big Car, big caps.

I'd definately loose the ugly front bumper. I'm sure about the hunk, never have been big on hunks myself. [IMG]

Here's the Copperhead Metallic from PPG. Link to Stacy David's page.

Probably lighter and brighter than you wanted. You'd never lose it in the parking lot. PPG also makes a great burnt orange color that I'd use if it was mine. [IMG]
the 57 Chevy color is almost a root beer copper color. It used to be the most popular factory color on 57 Chevs till they all got re-painted resale red, refrigerator white and piss yellow. [IMG]
Here's one I found on the net. This one is actually a bit lighter than stock color but damned close.

What era did chrome reverse wheels debute?

    [/ QUOTE ]
Actually I have the April 1949 issue of Hot Rod Magazine and it has an ad for chrome reverse wheels in it for $10 apiece!
Like the color idea Denise. My take on it would be to do a two tone scheme using a medium dark copper for the body and darkening it up slightly to do the fenders. You could even do a scallop paint theme(very simple)using the lighter shade on the fenders and the darker shade on the body.Sort of a,"ghost scallop"effect.
As far as interior goes,I would opt for a two tone copper color using about 2"vertical pleats with a fairly large(about six inch)roll at the top of the seat and the front edge of the seat bottom.
I had initially thought of an eggshell color for the top but the more I think about it the more a white one makes sense.I also like the idea of utilizing a rear bumper on the front to lose some of the m***iveness.Chrome reversed wheels with small caps sound good also.Again just my opinion.
Will try to make it to your house for the envelope stuffing.

Anybody remember the satin red 48 chev pickup?...I think it was Cole Fosters. The Olds would be *****in in basecoat copper only.

The white on the top should match as close as possible to the widewhites.

I love copper! thats the color i've decided to paint my '53 when done...
    Candy copper with flake!

The color from "copperhead" on "trucks" made my final decision..

Big Old's would look wild that color, or a similar one in my oppinion [IMG]

That all sounds great Denise...I plan on painting my 49 chevy a copper root beer color. My truck probably the same.. I think coppers and such have a cl***ic look to them. All your ideas sound great, only 1 thing I wouldnt do the animal print, haha. Just my opinion, I'm sure it will look great.

The metallic copper Chevy color is called Sierra Gold, intro'd in '56, often paired with a beige called Adobe. In '57 it gaianed favor as a solo color, and in '58 Sierra Gold rarely appeared in two-tone combinations. It's definitely best on a large, soft-surace car like Big Olds. As I recall, Chevy discontinued the color after 1958, when it was popular on Impala hartops. The 1959 Models were treated to a whole new paint look featuring some close color pairings of two-tone treatments.

  13. Hey Denise,

Well, what a surprise! Congraulations on the redo of your ride. I think you made a fine decision and will not be disappointed.

There's not doubt that your a Hot Rodder. Everyone knows this, nuff sed. There's alot of great ideas here, along with talented people.

I would humbly suggest a lowered rear end stance. This will give it a nice cutom stance. There were many customs built in the day that had full race motors in 'em. Your choice of color is Dyn-o-mite. Maybe ribbed bumpers front and back?

Although a major gut wrenching decision, Maybe a mild 2in. or 2 1/2in. chop? Really think about it. Chrome reverse w/o the caps. I hate the "smoothie" look.

Just my humble opinion. What ever you do ultimately conjour up, I know it will be great. There are now alot guys here chomping at the bit to help ya, including myself.

    You go woman! [IMG]

    Joel

p.s. How about a nice tasteful striping design on the trunk in it's copper primer stage, lovingly applied by Moi.
I hope I don't have to fight to many guys to do that.

Denise, I guess that next summer we'll be seeing a NEW Big Olds. That sounds great and your ideas are right on in my opinion. I agree with you I'm not a fan of skirts (except short ones on lovely ladies) but they look good an a VERY select few cars. The only thing I would do if you go with chrome reverse is use some king of small hub cap to give that SMOOTH look. Maybe Spyders but I'm not sure of that either. I guess I'm short on vision when it comes to customs, but when a killer one shows up I'm the first to give my approval. Now if your talking HOT RODS I"ve got definite ideas how they should look.
Another thing I'm sure of is that however you decide to do the car YOU will still outshine the final product.

My buddy, Randy, has this Olds with the requisite chromies and wide whites with a healthy chop. He also runs a 455 olds. Remember this one Denise?

Great ideas guys. My wheel idea steals these...
Already flipped pic and adjusted size for the photoshop Gods...

  19. Love that bronze idea too!
I like safariknut's two-tone idea re the fenders. I've always thought those big 40's GM fade-aways into the doors just beg for a little contrast. Give you big pontoon wheel spats look. I'm for skirts too on that big fella.

Like you don't have enough opinions already:

Copper - yes, Sierra Gold would be a good choice
Whitewalls - YES, maybe a little less rubber rake than you have now
Spinners - yes: early Fiestas ('53-'55) rather than '56, or early Lancers ('55-'56); either would look great on your car. Paint the rims a color with a little contrast to the body color, like orange or gold.
White top - I'd do off white or tan, but white will look good. It would look good chopped, but it's a lot of work (with a folding top) and you could do it later.
Interior - some kind of earth tone, like saddle, would look better than black with the copper paint, and it's not bad to keep clean
    Skirts - no
    Lakes pipes, spotlights - no
Lower it a little more in the back, so it's almost level.

Good luck! It should look great when you're done!

  21. What..eepp..sorry Denise Sleepin!

    Well nothing ground breaking here.

Simple trim likes been done..nice chromies...keep the rears hidden to save h***les..first one has stockish fold up top..
lowered 3-4 inches more...if that possible..its low already...

seconf third ones..with chopped screen and low lid carson top...and bagged more...

Did i mention i was COLOR BLIND? hehe

    =]

    cheers! [IMG]

this is just my 2 cents & a quick hack job in PS. But none the less the section job does tighten the lines IMHO. [IMG]

Hey Denise, when you're looking at color chips. Look at a '65-'66 Mustang color called "Amberglo" it's a very cool medium copper metallic with a lot of depth. I've always really liked it.

I saw a "streetrod" olds when we were up in the pacific northwest that had a front bumper EXACTLY as hatch has shown.. If I remember correctly they used 4 of the "outer" bumper ends to make up the front.. another Method that "might" work is to use a section out of a bumper like is on the back of your car ... or my wagon...

granted you'd have to cut the center out of the rear bumper to graft into the front but I really really think it would work...

as for the side trim (on the fenders and extensions) I really really like them on the big olds' but if you decide not to use them and they are in good condition their "sale" might pay for more parts down the road.. They are very hard to find in good condition.
