    I enjoyed the story.

Any chance you recall a part number for the cam or possibly the brand #, type and specs?
Also, what you have for exhaust on the car. Thanks.

  2. I installed another Edelbrock Performer Series Cam and lifters (I was happy with its characteristics so replaced with same).
My exhaust is a generic set of Block Hugger Headers (drivers side required a bit of persuasion), followed up with glass packs and duals to the rear bumper.

Thank you, sir, for that quick response.
Back in the day my brother bought an Off-Topic Zed 28 and installed that package. Remember its performance offering I bought the same package for my foray into my second SBC motor build. Still on the stand actually.

Interesting enough I searched out to read their version of cam installation and it to see cam specs and giving the first 4 pages of the installation package pdf a view, I said look at that, the Spanish version arrived and thought I wonder what other languages were covered. Flipping a few more pages I see this:

CATALOG #: 2102 ENGINE: 283-350 c.i.d. Chevrolet V8, 1967-1987 RPM RANGE: Idle-5500 CAUTION: Use only Sure Seat Valve Springs, #5802 or 5902 Use stock ratio rocker arms only Duration at 0.006" Lift: Intake 278° Exhaust 288° Duration at 0.050" Lift: Intake 204° Exhaust 214° Lift at Cam: Intake 0.280" Exhaust 0.295" Lift at Valve: Intake 0.420" Exhaust 0.442" Centerlines: Lobe Separation: 112° Intake CL: 107° Timing at 0.050" Lift: Open Close Intake: 5°ATDC 29°ABDC Exhaust: 44°BBDC 10°BTDC CAUTION: Use Performer-Link Timing Chain and Gear Set, #7800. Do not use late model timing sets. They are machined in a retarded position and are not recommended for this camshaft installation. Edelbrock Performer-Link True Rolling Timing Sets feature three keyways for specific timing selection. Always use the “0” or straightup timing mark when installing Performer-Plus camshafts with Performer-Link Timing Sets.

I'm almost 100% sure I also bought the matching gear set; I say almost because it was a long time ago and I'm not sure. I'm going to see if I can find the receipt. But I'd know if I had played with those offset cam /valve opening position's, I didn't because that I'd remember.

I have to ask, was your chain and gears from the Edelbrock package and last question, have you played much with valve opening and closing events. Thanks again.

  4. In this case I used Edelbrocks package which included cam. lifters, and timing components.
As far as "valve opening and closing events" I do as I always have..start with number 1 cyl on TDC, adjust a bit loose for "break in" rotate crank adjust #8, then again rotate adjust #4 cyl, and so on and so forth thru the cylinder firing order sequence.
After the 20 minute "break in" 2000 rpm occasional 1500 rpm using Lucas break in oil, I re-visit the valves adjustment and adjust accordingly..zero lash, but still being able to rotate pushrods with my fingers.

While I thank you, and not looking to steer away from the story, I was referring to the 3 timing adjustments to the crank sprocket on installation depending on the gear set that was purchased. Could be why I don't remember doing more than aligning the dots. I got the set without such adjustment. Thank you.
