I was looking through some old books and seen a feature on his roadster. What happened to him after he was the editor at Rod&Custom. Also, is his roadster still around? Just curious, thanks.
I don't know about the whereabouts of the roadster. Bill founded NEUSPEED and makes parts for tuner cars in Camarillo I think.
Ryan had a feature on the HAMB a few years back allowing members to interview famous sorts...Neuman was one. You could send in a question and he'd post an answer...I am not at all sure how one would go about finding that!
In the Sept. '62 R&C, he did a how-to on installing an alternator on that car...The horror....the horror...
There was a post a long time ago looking for his roadster. I don't think it was found. I have Spped Age magazine from the 50's with the build of it.
I believe that Neuman actually knew where the roadster was...I think he said Arizona. It was in the hands of someone who did not want to be publicized and did not want to sell it. Don't remember exactly where I saw or heard that, but either a post or in the interview section on the HAMB.
Bill sure got 'modernized'...but stuck to his old ways, too. (note the 'ass dragging' stance, like his old '31 had)
Honestly I've LOVED that car since I was a kid. One of the first "fifties" hot rods that really turned my head. I got the Car Craft 1961 "Roadsters" issue when I was 13. Up till that time, I have been looking at Jacobs restoration of the Niekamp car, Jack Morgans '34, Bryans highboy and the Doane Spencer car, that stuff was cool, but for whatever reason really didn't put me over the edge. When I got that magazine and saw Nuemann's car and Lentz's "Goldenrod", it was like a revelation. I have been hung up on that circa 1955/1962 thing ever since. I saw the "pre-Barris" version of Kassa's 3 window as an infant in a Spotlight book, maybe that set an unconscious "hook" in my brain that was triggered when I saw those two cars, but to this day, NOTHING trips my trigger like a deeply channeled late fifties hot rod with a rolled rear pan, chopped deuce shell and full wheelcovers. Cycle fenders don't hurt either...
