Going to be tough finding older cars done that way. What kind of car are ya building? I think it could look cool but the color of the car becomes very important. I like this color with the black trim
Remember when the HAMB was Traditional hot rods and customs ? Neither hot rods nor customs had that late 90's look...…..Just saying
Ya got a point. But I have searched a bunch of old threads with later model clips, 5 speeds, chassis swaps, 4 links and bags ........
I don’t think this thread is off topic at all as ford even did black nickle plate in 42. And used tastefully there’s no reason it wouldn’t look the part. That being said the “well five speed chassis swap air bag” is kind of bullshit, they’ve cracked down on that pretty hard in the last few years. I’d say one in every 800 posts has anything even related to any of those things.
Some early econo rides had black trim but looks more like paint instead of chrome. What kind of ride are ya building
I normally think of black chrome on bikes, it has a unique look. Not traditional, could be interesting. Talk to your chrome shop, get to know them, they will become the new owner of a lot of your money.
Back in the 70's I built a 1956 panhead and did a lot of black chrome, at that time it cost more than conventional chrome plating and it really didn't hold up as well as chrome, maybe it's good for a show piece but a real world car or bike I wouldn't do it again. HRP
The ones I’ve seen have been 42 ford cars that were made just before they stopped for the war. Though I’m curious if they didn’t make them for military use as well? I gather it was because of war rations on chrome, rubber and everything else that they went to the black nickle plate but from hub caps to door handles, all the trim inside and out was black. @blacktopbuddha had one for a long time and would know more but I don’t know how often he pops on here anymore
Actually I may be wrong it could have been black zinc not nickle. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/1942-ford-tudor.1108239/#post-12580001 That link shows one for sale
With traditional at least you can buy from vendors at a reasonable price, maybe find some good chrome for sale, doubtfully original good chrome, but repops have been out for a long time. Hows the rest of the car set up. Sounds like you want to set it apart from the crowd.
helped a friend finish a Harley early last year. All The chrome was powder coated semi black It looked great Did guys go with black trim on their rides back in the day? Probably not or very very uncommon I know we think about pro touring cars done this way. I can see it being tastefully done for a sinister looking sled of even a drag ride My students at school call this look “murdered out” I will say I replaced a lot of black chrome trim on European cars under warranty due to fading
just got it this is my 10th project just turn 73 last week. sometime we never learn. dont buy a white car. Great new 383 strocker, aluminum radiator new booster, disk brake muncie 4 speed.Decent interior drive good sounds great looks good until I got it home and got it on the lift. All the floor brace full of spray foam rocker foam full with roof coating covering all of it. Rocker covers patch panel covers bondo in. Got complete floor pan body off on a rotisserie frame going to powdercoater tomorrow.
What kind of car? generally dont like it unless on some off topic later stuff but I have been surprised before.
As some have mentioned, black chrome was used quite a bit on bikes back in the 70's because it offered some contrast to paint or "real" chrome, especially on smaller parts. I can't see where it would look right on most cars unless it were small parts like emblems or perhaps door handles and lock escutcheons. To do something like bumpers or other large pieces not only wouldn't look good, but wouldn't be cost effective.
