I went to get some more garnet 80 gritt blasting material from tractor supply and they no longer sell it. Its now coal slag. Any of you guys tried it. Cant use sand = cancer.
I use coal slag (a.k.a. Black Beauty) on thick steel. Too aggressive for sheet metal in my opinion. Harbor Freight here carries a couple different blast medias. Maybe they have garnet.
Coal slag works on frames parts heavier rust ..Like said Too course though ..finer material =smoother finish..
There are more than one coal slag grits. 12/40, 20/40 and 30/60. Finer works OK for me on sheet metal. IMO any blasted surface should get a quick p*** with a random orbit sander though. I usually use 120grit paper for that. I find the black beauty creates a lot of dust as it breaks up. Always have a good filter mask on. Lots of nasty stuff in coal slag.
Shouldn't be blasting with anything without proper lung protection. You are kidding yourself if you think any of the materials are safe to breath.
I prefer garnet...my water jet buddy turned me on to it....as said above, any water jet shop will have it and it is superior to anything else I have ever used
Northern Tool carries both the coal slag and the amber blast (caused beer bottles), which i prefer. Works well on rust and paint removal. Also, I blast on about 70-75 psi. High pressure shatters your media and creates a lot more dust.. as well as increasing the chance of warpage.
You do understand that you are breathing in more than just the media dust when you sandblast? Your lungs need protection from it all.
